Screen Time Tips for a Smooth Summer

1. Embrace the "Trust and Verify" Approach

Building trust with your child is essential, but it's equally important to verify that screen time boundaries are respected. Open conversations about expectations and periodic check-ins can reinforce mutual trust without resorting to secret monitoring, which may erode the parent-child relationship.

2. Implement Clear Parental Controls

Utilizing parental control tools can provide structure to your child's screen time. These tools are especially effective for preteens and younger children. Ensure that controls are set transparently, and discuss their purpose with your child to foster understanding and cooperation.

3. Set Specific Screen Time Goals

Encourage your child to identify activities or projects they wish to pursue during the summer. Framing these as personal goals can motivate them to engage in diverse experiences beyond screens. Be mindful that terms like "goals" may feel burdensome; instead, focus on the excitement of new endeavors.

4. Establish Defined Tech-Free Times

Creating routines where technology is turned off at specific times can alleviate the stress of constant monitoring. Whether it's during family meals or before bedtime, consistent tech-free periods promote healthier habits and reduce screen dependency.

Helping Youth Heal: Support Through Family Addiction, Trauma & Stress

When children experience trauma—whether from addiction in the family or other stressors—their nervous systems adapt in ways that can disrupt emotional regulation and development. Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) can have long-lasting effects, but there are ways to help children heal. In this webinar, author Trish Luna shares how Lambi Learns About Addiction uses evidence-based practices to help children build emotional awareness, resilience, and self-regulation skills. Grounded in neuroscience and trauma-informed care, the webinar introduces tools like mindful breathing and grounding techniques to support healthy brain development and healing. Parents, educators, and mental health professionals will gain practical insights for helping children thrive in the face of adversity.
