Get Ready for Summer Reading!
The summer reading slide is real...but here are a few ways to keep kids up to reading speed during the summer months. Libraries in the areas RIF of NOVA serves offer challenges and opportunities for children and their families to have some fun and read, read, read!!!

The Fairfax County Library system is featuring a program called
Reading Takes You Everywhere!
Running from June 15 to September 1, the program asks children to list the books they have read and turn in a reading log to the library to receive
a coupon booklet with lots of prizes and discounts. Reading requirements vary by age. Click

Prince Williams County's program runs June 11 to August 11 with the theme
Explore New Worlds. Kids and young adults can register online or at any library to win weekly challenge prizes. Also on the schedule: free events for all ages such as puppet shows, theater, arts and crafts, STEAM, music performances, and much more! To learn more, click

The Alexandria Public Library system began its program on May 29, with programs for children from birth to rising kindergarten, from rising grades one to five, and rising sixth to 12th graders. Truly something for readers of all ages! Learn more about the

As the program says, reading lets your mind travel on distant roads, seek out global cities, explore vast new lands or dream about a galaxy far, far away... Indeed!

Thank you to all who gave during the Do More 24 campaign. Because of YOU, just over $1,700 was raised to support children's literacy. That's over 850 books to give to the children we serve -- who can now take a book of their own choosing home to read, love, and share. Bravo!

Butterflies and Springtime
The ACCA Child Development Center in Annandale held its RIF of NOVA book distribution in early May with the theme "Butterflies and Springtime."
Just look at the faces of the children who were able choose a book of their own to read, love, and share because of YOU and your contributions!!!

Meanwhile, the Falls Church McLean Children's Center held its book distribution, too. The children were enthralled as they selected their RIF of NOVA books and listened to a reading of

RIF of NOVA Board Celebrates at Roaring Twenties Lunch!

Board member Elizabeth Promen was honored with the McNamara Award for her years of service to RIF of NOVA. She is area co-chair for Fairfax East. Margaret McNamara founded Reading is Fundamental in 1966.

Board member Sheila Jonas received the Shelton award for her many years of service to RIF of NOVA. The award was created in memory of Jerry Shelton, a long-time RIF of NOVA board member and supporter.
|
|
Another long-time RIF of NOVA supporter is Lynda Robb, posing at left in her 1920s finery with board member Gloria Johnson, co-area chair for Arlington.
