FROM NOW THROUGH JUNE 8...HELP US
"DO MORE"
TO PROVIDE BOOKS FOR DESERVING AREA CHILDREN!
|
|
DO MORE 24 is a 24-hour day of giving on Thursday, June 8***, powered by United Way of the National Capital Area
.
Last year, RIF of NOVA raised $4,000 with its
Do
More campaign. Those funds allowed us to fund the purchase of an additional book for every student at six schools. Next year -- and with your help -- we plan to provide books for
more than 25,000 children, 2,500
more than this year!
Thank you from RIF of NOVA for helping provide books that our kids can choose, own, and read again and again!!!
|
|
Your generosity helps RIF of NOVA make a meaningful difference in the lives of children in the city of Alexandria, and in Fairfax, Arlington, and Prince William counties. The opportunity to pick a book to own is empowering! And the faces of our children show it!
Every dollar you give will help buy books for additional students!
A minimum donation of $10 provides 5 books for our children. A $24 donation ($1 an hour x 24 hours) provides 12 books. An even more generous donation gives even more!

Other cool race stuff:
Teams: RIF of NOVA schools and sites are encouraged to form running and walking teams of students, teachers, parents, liaisons, administrators, and friends. Please email us, and we'll get back to you with more information about team participation.
Costumes are welcome! In fact, costumes are encouraged -- particularly if they portray a favorite book character. Since our run date is so close to Halloween, it's another chance to wear that wig, paint that face, or don that witch's cape.
Awards will be given to the overall male and female finishers. Medals will be given to all Fun Run finishers. Race shirts with the RIF logo will be guaranteed to all participants who register online by October 13.
Sponsors: We are looking for sponsors to donate to our race. If you have, are part of, or know a business or individual who would like to sponsor the Book it for Books race, please send an email to: [email protected]. Sponsors will receive publicity on our website, in our media, and on our race shirts! Plus, they can feel good about contributing to a great cause!

"WE ARE THE WORLD" -- RIF OF NOVA'S ANNUAL LUNCHEON
Last, but certainly not least, the RIF of NOVA board held its annual, end-of-the-academic year luncheon on May 30 with the theme, "We are the World." The event featured the installation of 2017-2018 RIF of NOVA board officers as well as the announcement of awards for service and dedication to the cause of books for kids. In addition to the Jerry Shelton and Margaret McNamara Awards (see below), special commendations were given to:
-- Michael Bury (son of board member Chris Bury) for his considerable contributions to help RIF of NOVA secure several Capital One grants over the years, as well as his efforts in soliciting volunteers from Capital One to read to children at RIF of NOVA book distributions.
-- Charlotte Nau, of the Arlington Public Schools Title One Office, for her many years of hard work in preparing and coordinating RIF of NOVA award certificates for liaisons and area programs.

The
Jerry Shelton Award was presented to Hazeline Harris. The Shelton Award honors a long-time board member who is actively engaged in promoting RIF of NOVA. Hazeline is shown at left with last year's Shelton recipient Gloria Johnson.
