Summer Reading Celebration
& Book Drive!
|
For the month of June we'll be hosting a book drive, which will conclude with a celebratory night of fun for children of all ages on June 27 from 6-7 PM! We're teaming up with Scholastic for this opportunity to donate gently used or new books to Nevada County's PARTNERS Family Resource Centers.
|
|
There are three Family Resource Center locations serving Nevada County residents.
For a list of their services click here.
All contributions made to our book drive will go directly to the Family Resource Center's lending libraries in Grass Valley, Penn Valley, and the San Juan Ridge. You may donate at any time in June but we're holding a special night on the 27th (during Thursday Night Market!) from 6-7 PM where we'll have crafts, a selfie photo station, and more. As a bonus, if you decide to make a donation that night you're welcome to take home a goodie bag on us!
The Summer fun doesn't stop there- come to our event on June 27 for a sneak peek at our July Magical Reading program! More details to come.

The Great Race is coming! Monday, June 24 11:45 AM
|
Each year there is a different route, and this year Grass Valley is a stop along The Great Race! Come see classic cars as the racers stop and have lunch before racing to the next town.
On Monday, June 24, downtown Grass Valley will travel back in time as over 120 vintage road racers will rumble down East Main then onto Mill Street in the only stop for the Great Race in the Sacramento area.
|
|
To celebrate this historic race, Nevada County Habitat for Humanity and Grass Valley Downtown Association have partnered to hold a downtown rally where people can get an up-close experience of these vintage road machines. The event begins at 11am and ends at 4pm. Portions of Main and Mill Street will be closed to create a lunchtime pit stop for racers. We'll see you there!

Macfarlane asks a vital and unsettling question: "Are we being good ancestors to the future Earth?"
Underland
marks a new turn in his long-term mapping of the relations of landscape and the human heart. From its remarkable opening pages to its deeply moving conclusion, it is a journey into wonder, loss, fear, and hope. At once ancient and urgent, this is a book that will change the way you see the world.

With
Calypso
, Sedaris sets his formidable powers of observation toward middle age and mortality. Make no mistake: these stories are very, very funny--it's a book that can make you laugh 'til you snort, the way only family can. Sedaris's powers of observation have never been sharper, and his ability to shock readers into laughter unparalleled. But much of the comedy here is born out of that vertiginous moment when your own body betrays you and you realize that the story of your life is made up of more past than future.

Beloved author Elizabeth Gilbert returns to fiction with a unique love story set in the New York City theater world during the 1940s. Told from the perspective of an older woman as she looks back on her youth with both pleasure and regret (but mostly pleasure),
City of Girls
explores themes of female sexuality and promiscuity, as well as the idiosyncrasies of true love. Written with a powerful wisdom about human desire and connection, Gilbert has created a love story like no other.
