Class of 2018 Graduates Earning $2.1M in Scholarships
Students from West Allis Central, West Allis Nathan Hale, James E. Dottke, and Shared Journeys earned $2.1 million in scholarships. Superintendent Dr. Marty Lexmond explains, “Our goal is to have students college and career ready when they graduate. We are very proud of what this class has accomplished academically and in participation of extra-curricular activities. Graduation is always bittersweet because we will miss these students. National Honors Society
The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation’s premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. NHS serves to recognize those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since its beginning in 1921.
This spring, both West Allis Central and West Allis Nathan Hale High School welcomed new inductees to this organization.

General Mitchell Opens Outdoor Classroom
On Tuesday, May 22, 2018, the staff and students at General Mitchell Elementary held a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate their new outdoor classroom. Mayor Dan Devine and Superintendent Marty Lexmond were in attendance.
The outdoor classroom has a variety of seating options, from benches to logs, and can accommodate multiple classrooms of students at a time. It’s open to all grades and students, and can even be used by the community after school hours.
According to Principal Ryan Johnson, “Our outdoor classroom provides space for science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) activities. We also believe that learning outdoors can have a positive effect on wellness and student engagement.”

FREE Healthy Meals for Kids and Teens!
Stressing the importance of offering nutritious meals to children during the summer months, the WAWM Recreation and Community Services Department in partnership with Sodexo will sponsor the Summer Food Service Program. Free meals will be made available to children 18 years of age and under. The nine locations will be serving free meals this summer Monday-Friday from June 11-August 3, 2018.

WAWM RCS Workshop Helps Train Area Summer Camp Playground Staff
On Saturday, June 2, 2018, a number of WAWM district staff were on hand to train 160 employees from Region 4 of the Wisconsin Parks and Recreation Association, including over 100 from the West Allis-West Milwaukee Recreation and Community Services Department (WAWM RCS), that will be supervising camps and playgrounds this summer.

Whether partnering with Shared Journeys to promote academic and parenting success for young parents or helping to educate students about careers in healthcare, the District is proud to work with the dedicated professionals in this organization. On Wednesday, May 30, 2018, the Aurora West Allis Medical Center hosted a Health Science Awareness Day designed to showcase the wide variety of careers within the healthcare industry. Over 80 juniors and seniors attended the event which was held at the Medical Center.

Hosts “Dia De Cultura” Talent Show
On Friday, May 18, 2018, members of Nathan Hale’s Multicultural Club hosted a cultural talent show.
The program included foods, crafts and 21 cultural performances that were both modern and traditional. “Over 30 students performed in the talent show with acts that included Vietnamese fan dancing, hip hop dancers, a Swedish song, Irish dancing, Lion dancers, magic tricks, Spanglish songs, Rap, poetry readings, and a performance from Nathan Hale’s own Westallica,” explained Science teacher and club advisor, Anne Xiong. “The goal was to bring students together to appreciate the different cultures in our school and community.”

Frank Lloyd Wright Intermediate Students Enter the World of Journalism with School Newspaper
When teachers, Ashley Gorski, Carrie Clark, and Jackie Thomas-Moore decided to run an after-school newspaper club, they knew they'd be asking the same five questions over and over. “Answering those famous ‘who, what, where, when and why’ questions is still the foundation of a good news article,” states NxGL teacher, Ashley Gorski, “Our young journalists are learning how it’s done.”
The Wright Times
, an online newsletter published quarterly, involves the work of 20 students at Frank Lloyd Wright Intermediate School. They are responsible for writing, editing, and producing each edition.

West Milwaukee Intermediate School Collects Pennies Rises to Top Ten in State
This spring, the WMIS Student Council qualified for the “Loyal Lincoln Award” as one of the Top Ten Schools (out of 407 in Wisconsin) that have raised the most funds for the organization.
“Our Student Council provides leadership for Pennies for Patients and our student body really enjoys this fundraiser. We raised $4,286.56 this year. Combined with the past five years, we’ve raised $15,315.97 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society!” explains advisor, Jane Ehlert.

The Wisconsin RtI Center Recognized Schools Program celebrates school progress in expanding, refining, and sustaining implementation of both PBIS (behavior) and RtI (reading and math).
“Our multi-level systems of support is an important component of ensuring our students are college and career ready when they graduate.” explains Superintendent, Dr. Marty Lexmond. “The recognition these schools have earned demonstrates that we’re working hard to meet the individual academic and behavioral needs of our students and that we still have important work to do.”
