CONGREGATIONAL MEETING
JUNE 16, 2019

Please join us for the Congregational meeting on June 16 at 9:30 a.m. to hear a report from the PNC (Pastoral Nominating Committee), Rev. Michelle Bacon, Candidate for Pastor of United Presbyterian preach and the congregation will vote on the Terms of Call and to dissolve the PNC.
PENTECOST SUNDAY

As Pentecost Day approaches, I have been reminded of those blessings that come in the presence of ashes. There have been many memorial services in my time at your church and there is such finality to ashes - ashes to ashes, dust to dust, after all. Yet Pentecost arrives to remind us that ashes do not have the final word, and that fire does not come only to consume. It comes also to bless, to call, to inspire, to give to us what we could never begin to imagine on our own.

The fire of Pentecost scalds us toward speech, and this is a blessing and a miracle. This is not, however, where the greatest miracle lies. The miracle of Pentecost, as seminary professor Dr. Bill Mallard said, “is not a miracle of speaking. It is a miracle of hearing, and of understanding.”

How will we allow the Spirit to mark us, not only toward the word we need to speak, but also toward the word we need to hear? How will we open ourselves to the Spirit that comes to set us burning with vision?

“It is not the sparks caused by our difference
that haunt me but the brimstone of those bent
on assimilation and annihilation. I have felt the
template on my flesh, I have seen the wounded
and the scalded, and I am not persuaded that if
we look alike God will love us more.
I believe God loves the languages of those struggling
to speak the words embedded in our flesh of
every shape and hue. And I believe God blesses
every space where we are welcomed to speak with
tongues of fire and hear with hearts aflame.”

CONGREGATIONS &
COMMITTEE WORK

The PCUSA Church organizes its life and work through committees and councils. So before anyone roles their eyes a me thinking committees could never be fun or interesting think about this… It’s a good and joyful thing to have a variety of voices sitting around the table or sitting in a home or sitting in a coffee shop (you get the idea) getting to know one another better, working togther to create new possibiities and opportunities for fellowship events, projects, programs, creative worship, etc. for United Presbyterian Church.

Committees are an integral part of the church, made up of attenders, members, Elders, Deacons & Pastor of the faith community who together contribute to the success of the church's ministry and mission.

I would invite you to envision UPC’s life together with imagaination, creativity, and joy and think about ways that give life and enrich this faith community…especially as you get ready to welcome a new Pastor who will need all your voices and your spirit working together to keep a vibrant community of faith moving forward.

Following is a list of our current committees. We would like one Elder to serve on each committee, and again you can be a member or an attender of UPC to come to a meeting or to offer good ideas to the committee.  I would be happy to answer any of your questions about the responsibiliites that fall to each committee.

CONGREGATIONAL LIFE

Congregational Life is a newly revived committee at UPC. We're looking into opportunities for fellowship, both inside and outside of the church. We have a list of ideas and you should start watching the calendar online, for emails from UPC, and in the bulletins for upcoming opportunities to gather. We'd love to have a few more voices to ensure the range of opportunities are fun for everyone in different stages of life.  If you have an interest in being part of this committee, or an idea for an activity, please contact Hillary Utton at  hillaryutton@gmail.com
THANK YOU JOANNE

Session members, and the congregation, give heartfelt thanks to Joanne Lindahl for her many years of employment at UPC.  We encourage you to express your individual thanks to her as well.  You will certainly still be seeing Joanne for worship and around UPC.   Joanne began her UPC employment in 1984 working in the main office, where she coordinated and assisted all aspects of church life.  Over the course of time, and with changing leadership, she eventually moved to take over the custodial duties of UPC.  There is likely no one person who knows the ins and outs of UPC better than Joanne!  We send sincere thanks for her dedication, time and talents offered to UPC in more than 30 years of employment.  With grateful hearts, please continue to lift her in prayer.
