Showcasing Botswana's Finest Gems
Hundreds of millions of dollars of precious gems and stones will be on sale online in July in a diamond auction. The diamonds will be marketed in the Americas by MCC Worldwide which signed a memorandum of understanding with the Botswana Okavango Diamond Company, to enhance cooperation between the two parties. They will advance the capabilities of the diamond sector in the Americas and support sustainable development efforts in the global diamond sector. The agreement between MCC Worldwide and Okavango Diamond Company was aided by World Trade Center Delaware, which hosted the key players during a visit to Delaware by Botswana officials in November 2022.

Okavango Diamond Company, owned by the government of Botswana, will provide the diamonds. Its diamonds are sourced from the Debswana Diamond Company, which accounts for 98 percent of the country’s diamond production. Debswana is a partnership between the Republic of Botswana and De Beers.
The parcels of diamonds currently are previewed in Botswana followed by an online auction (ten per year). Plans are in the works to bring parcels of diamonds to the US for preview prior to the auction. The diamonds are rough stones which can be cut into the highest quality finished gemstones.

“Delaware is the Diamond State, and these diamonds are the world’s highest quality,” said George Kearns, chairman and CEO of MCC Worldwide. “The diamond trade between DMCC, Dubai and Okavango reached $1.3 billion in 2020, even during COVID. Less than 1 percent of Botswana’s diamonds are sold to U.S. buyers, so this is a dazzling opportunity for the US buyers.”

This is part of an overall plan to establish MCC’s world headquarters in Delaware. Kearns is vice-chair of the WTC Delaware board. World Trade Center Delaware also is leading a delegation to Botswana next month for the U.S.-Africa Business Summit.

PARTNER SPOTLIGHT
The University & Whist Club traces its history back to the Gilded Age. Today, it’s a city club with modern panache, combining the former Wilmington Whist Club and the University Club of Wilmington.

“It’s private dining in a historical atmosphere,” said banquet manager Margaret Reilly.

In addition to multiple large spaces suitable for business events and luncheons, members can book a private room for meetings and meals with clients. Through August, the club is open to the public for dining on Wednesdays, and the Carriage House – dating to 1902 – is open to the public on Friday nights.

The club is located in the Tilton Mansion, named for the first U.S. Surgeon General and Revolutionary War hero, Delaware native Dr. James Tilton. Enlarged several times over the centuries, today it is a distinguished structure as befits a distinguished club. World Trade Center Delaware members can join the Club at a 50% discount.
