The Word From Delavan UCC

Basking in the Glow of Pentecost
Pentecost Choir Festival 3 Pentecost Choir Festival 2
Wow!  What a Pentecost Celebration it was!
We started the day with a wonderful worship that involved our Cross Training students and teachers, retelling and celebrating the joy of the Holy Spirit in our midst.
That evening we had an amazing Choir Festival with the Our Redeemer Lutheran Choir.  With over 215 in attendance and over $1000 collected for Open Arms Free Medical Clinic it was a true celebration of the Spirit's power to bring people together.  The highlight for me, aside from the breathtaking music, was the watching the members from both choirs greet each other at the close of the program.  Truly a spirit of ecumenism filled the gathering.
As we move into summer and see beyond into the fall and another year of planning and program, it is my prayer that the Pentecost Spirit will continue to enliven, push, and surprise us.  I pray that we live as Pentecost people, not just for this season, but always... striving for a spirit of understanding, grace and extravagant welcome.
Surely the presence of the Lord is in this place!
Blessings,
Rev. Laura

In the month of June, the lectionary readings over several weeks tell a good portion of the Elijah's story. We will be using pieces from Mendelssohn's "Elijah" to heighten our understanding of the prophet's journey.

Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) was fascinated with the large choral works of Bach and Haydn and Handel. He studied and conducted such works as Handel's "Messiah," Bach's "Passions" and Haydn's "Creation." Mendelssohn traveled extensively in the British Isles (on ten different trips during his lifetime) and was commissioned to write a large choral work for the Birmingham Festival, a large-scale event in England. Mendelssohn's oratorio, "Elijah" was premiered there in 1846 just one year before his death at age 38. Mendelssohn had the German text translated into English for the premier in Birmingham. The text told the story and events of the prophet Elijah taken directly from the books 1 Kings and 2 Kings. This oratorio contains beautiful music and is a considered to be a masterpiece in sacred music.

FINE ARTS DAY CAMP

This year Fine Arts Day Camp will be held from June 24 - 28 for students entering grades 2 - 7. This year we will have classes for Art, Culinary Arts, Dance, Drama, Music, and Camp Choir. Each day will be packed with fun-filled arts experiences from 9 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. Our theme this year is "Art Through the Ages." Students will be exploring the arts through the Roaring 20s, Fabulous 50s, Groovy 60s and Rad 80s. On Friday, June 28 students will have a special presentation by a professional magician.

EVERYONE is invited to the final performance on Friday, June 28 at 3 P.M. in the sanctuary. All students will be performing in the camp choir, dancing and presenting short dramatic skits. Please reserve the date and come enjoy the artistic expressions of our campers!

SUMMER MUSIC

Please contact me if you are interested in presenting special music for summer worship. It's wonderful to hear such beautiful music performed by so many talented musicians in our congregation.

I would love to get an instrumental ensemble together to play hymns and a special arrangement of sacred music. All instruments are welcome! Please contact me if you would like to participate in an instrumental ensemble!

A NOTE OF THANKS

I would like to extend a special thanks to all of the musicians in the Chancel Choir, Hand Chimes, and instrumentalists that have blessed our worship services with beautiful music throughout the past year. Your work and dedication are truly amazing.

Thanks to all who helped in making the Joint Choir Festival a great success. Your contributions and work are greatly appreciated.

A special thanks to Lois Stritt and her committee for treating our musicians to a wonderful dinner in celebration of the marvelous music that has graced our worship services throughout the year!

On Thursday, April 25, 2013, UW Extension Horticulturist, Chrissy Wen, talked to the Spunkster Senior Retirees about "Preparing Planting Beds and Sun and Shade Plants".  A healthy salad bar luncheon followed the meeting.

Barbara Hessenthaler, Betty Schalmo, and Ruth Haase provided a wonderful appreciative breakfast on Sunday, May 19, 2013 for the 2012-13 Cross Training Teachers, Debi Van Den Boom, Tammy Hubbard, Jill Sorg, Larry Baker, and Rev. Laura.  (not pictured are Corinne Thomas, Nancy Zikuda, and David Jonuska)

Leadership Planning Session
By Ruth Haase

Please plan to attend the leadership planning session which will be held in lieu of the June council meeting. The meeting is scheduled for June 18 at 6:00 pm. It will begin with a light supper and then move into a discussion and visioning for the next year. This is actually phase two in the sabbatical process. Plan to discuss topics like leadership in a revitalized church, our church's mission statement, worship opportunities for the fall, the format for the Christian Education program in the fall, and the inquiry/learning process about an open and affirming designation. See you there!

I just returned from the wonderful Joint Choir Festival featuring the choirs of the Delavan United Church of Christ and Our Redeemer Lutheran Church.  Thank you Rev. Laura for being such a welcoming and humble ambassador of the church and thank you Nancy Rasmussen, Chancel Choir, and instrumentalists for filling the sanctuary with such moving musical selections.  I am so proud to be a member of the Delavan United Church of Christ.
