What We're Reading

In celebration of Juneteenth Day, we're reading books that engage with history and acknowledge ongoing work toward liberation and equality. Check them out at the library:

Invisible Man

by Ralph Ellison

Recommended by QUINN, who notes this is "an incredible work of what has been termed Black existentialism, with absolutely electrifying prose. The story follows an unnamed Black man, who narrates his coming of age from a small town in the rural South to an all-Black college to the streets of Harlem, contemplating his identity and experiences of "invisibility" he has lived through. He reflects on how he at times swims within, and other times agitates against, a world that does not truly see him."

How the Word is Passed

by Clint Smith

Recommended by CAROLYN, who describes this book as fascinating and notes the author "has some fabulous poetry also about being a Black man, about how poorly the Katrina emergency was handled and the perception that race played a role in that, and about raising Black kids in a world he finds very problematic." Carolyn also notes there is an interview with this author available from The On Being Project that first introduced her to them - find it here.

The Warmth of Other Suns

by Isabel Wilkerson

"In this epic, beautifully written masterwork, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Isabel Wilkerson chronicles one of the great untold stories of American history: the decades-long migration of black citizens who fled the South for northern and western cities, in search of a better life. From 1915 to 1970, this exodus of almost six million people changed the face of America." --Provided by the publisher.
