Can't wait for June's sunny days
and BBQ weather!
I hope everyone is in a good place right now. I'm lucky that I work from my Studio among the greenery and the beautiful flowers that my husband Emil has planted in our garden. He just told me that because of COVID isolation, he is way ahead on his "outdoor" schedule for power washing, flower planting and prepping the lawn this Spring! This means he can afford to start relaxing before Father's Day for once.
What Emil is doing is far from what my Dad had in mind for my sister and me back in the day... dragging us out with him, to work the family "farm" in Brooklyn, NY! Looking back, I miss every minute of it.
Wishing everyone a
very happy Father's Day !!
Trying to be a city farmer in our Brooklyn backyard with my Daddy and sister! Our family version of the "American Gothic"
My Dad loved to demo at his shows, so that he can focus on his paintings and leave all the sales and talking to my mom - perfect partnership!
Notice that I take after my Dad with his display skills ... completely fill every square inch of space available!

June | Pearl and Alexandrite
June birthdays claim two birthstones; pearl and Alexandrite. Pearls have been wildly popular in jewelry for centuries because of their natural beauty. Alexandrite gemstones are extremely rare and desirable since they change color based on the lighting.
People have coveted natural pearls as symbols of wealth and status for thousands of years; the oldest written mention being in 2,206 BC. In ancient China, pearls were believed to guarantee protection from fire and fire-breathing dragons. In Europe, they symbolized modesty, chastity, and purity.
Since the discovery of alexandrite
, the gemstone has been thought to bring luck, good fortune and love. In Russia, it is considered to be a stone
of very good omen. It is believed to bring balance in the interaction between the physical manifest world and the unmanifest spiritual, or astral world.
People often ask me
Baroque pearls or 'wild pearls' are cultivated pearls with a nacre core inside (therefore they are also called 'nucleus pearls'). That core is not round but can have all kinds of shapes and sizes. The nacre grows around the core and follows the shape of the core. The full-grown pearl has irregular shapes, depending on the core.
A lot of the cultivated freshwater pearls can be called baroque pearls, because their core is mantle-tissue nucleated, instead of bead nucleated. But only the very irregular shaped pearls are called 'baroque' pearls and the other once are called after their shape, like button or potato pearl.
Cultivated saltwater pearls can also be baroque pearls. Their shape is mostly a 'teardrop' because their core is a spherical nucleated bead.
Valuable or not?
The South Sea and the Tahiti pearls are the most valuable baroque pearls you can find. They are rather expensive since it takes a long time before the oyster has 'made' enough nacre around the core. The longer it takes, the more beautiful the nacre of the pearl. And when it takes longer to grow a perfect baroque pearl the rarer its harvest, and so, more expensive.
