WHAT WE'VE BEEN UP TO

Focusing on Access

Members of our newly formed Accessibility & Inclusion Committee

after an in-person meeting at Entrust Community Services on May 19

In January, we launched an Accessibility and Inclusion Committee. Formed by 13 members of our community (including two CCC board members) this committee is helping us identify and prioritize ways that we can improve the accessibility of our lands, communications, and programs. After generating a long list of possible improvements, this committee is shifting into an advisory role to help prioritize investments in trailhead infrastructure, signage, our website, and the focus of our outreach work.

Many improvements will take years to do well and with community input. Thanks to Land Trust Alliance, who supported and funded the first phase of this work, we are grateful to have been afforded the time and resources to build new relationships with community members who are committed to helping us along the journey of bettering access to outdoor spaces and programs.

If you are interested in joining our Accessibility & Inclusion Advisory Committee, we are especially interested in recruiting people with disabilities who can help advise us based on their lived experiences and knowledge. Please contact Cy (eco@cowichecanyon.org).

What to Look for on Trails

Round-headed desert buckwheat (eriogonum sphaerocephalum)

in Cowiche Canyon

Buckwheats abound! Look out for the soft yellows of Northern desert buckwheat (aka Arrowleaf or heartleaf) (eriogonum compositum) and Round-headed desert buckwheat (eriogonum sphaerocephalum). Also, the multi-colored flowerheads of Douglas’ desert buckwheat (eriogonum douglasii).

Some very colorful migrant birds are nesting in the canyon and gullies of Snow Mountain Ranch. Bullock’s Orioles (Icterus bullockii) weave uniquely pendulous hanging nests (seen in this beautiful video). You can find old oriole nests hanging off branches above the West entrance to Cowiche Canyon. Mating pairs tend to build nests together. One partner tends to work on the tougher outer layers – weaving together grass and stems and tougher fibers -- while one works on the inside, with softer grasses and animal fur. Also, male Lazuli Bunting (Passerina amoena), which have brilliant cornflower blue heads, can be heard belting out territorial songs atop shrubs in Cowiche Canyon and gullies of Snow Mountain Ranch.
