From the Director
Dear Colleague,

Last week we held our first in-person User Meeting since 2019! Over 100 in-person attendees enjoyed an informative and fun day of CHESS updates, science talks, posters, and a keynote speech from Nobel Prize winner Roald Hoffman. We were also joined by about 40 remote attendees.

In the plenary session, we looked back on a successful year of combined in-person and remote operations and looked forward to the construction of the New Experimental Hall/High Magnetic Field Beamline which started this spring.

A science talk was presented by our student paper award prize winner, Jason Huang, who discussed his paper “Disorder Dynamics in Battery Nanoparticles During Phase Transitions Revealed by Single Particle-Diffraction.” His work was also recently featured in the Cornell Chronicle.

We are excited to announce two new members of the Users’ Executive Committee, Ashley Bucsek and Kushol Gupta. Both members will work with other representatives of the UEC to help cultivate the user experience at CHESS. As always, you can reach our UEC through the link above for any comments or questions.

We are also looking forward to an upcoming workshop in July: Computing, Machine Learning, and Data-Intensive Science at Synchrotron Facilities. Please register at the above link. In preparation, the organizer of this workshop are asking the synchrotron community to fill out this survey, even if you don’t plan to attend the workshop.

Thanks to everyone who helped make this year’s CHESS User Meeting a success! We truly enjoyed seeing many of you at the meeting and look forward to seeing those who couldn’t make it at the next User Meeting.

Thanks, and Best Wishes,
Joel Brock, Director, CHESS (email Joel)
The 2022 CHESS User Meeting

Over 100 in-person attendees enjoyed an informative and fun day of CHESS updates, science talks, posters, and a keynote speech from Nobel Prize winner Roald Hoffman. We were also joined by about 40 remote attendees. A workshop on research opportunities for optical control of physical properties in biological, chemical, and materials systems was also held the day after the User Meeting.
User's Executive Committee - New Members!
Ashley Bucsek and Kushol Gupta are the newly-elected members of the Users' Executive Committee. Congratulations! The full list of committee members can be found here.
Poster/Paper Awards
At the CHESS Users' Meeting, we recognized the best student paper and outstanding poster presentations based on research performed at CHESS during the past year. Click through for more information about the winners.
Workshop: Computing, Machine Learning, and Data-Intensive Science at Synchrotron Facilities
In July CHESS will be hosting an interdisciplinary, interactive workshop on the challenges and opportunities in scientific computing, machine learning, and other aspects of data-intensive science at synchrotron facilities.
Dynamics of recrystallized grains in a hot-compressed Mg-Zn-Ca alloy
Recent research performed at CHESS presents new insights into the microstructural evolution which occurs during annealing of Mg alloys using in-situ X-ray diffraction. These alloys have potential to make vehicles lighter and reduce greenhouse gases.
