We remember and we honor. We hope your Memorial Day was filled with gratitude and peace for those we have lost. - Steve
May was a month of honoring and remembering. From our mothers, to our fallen heroes who gave their lives for our freedom and also to those who founded Salinas at the 150th birthday celebration - Founders Day.

In celebrating Mothers' Day, I had the privilege recently to witness my wife Danielle receive the Women of Influence award from the Silicon Valley Business Journal. Incredibly enough, my mother received the same award 15 years ago. Danielle accepted the award while 8 months pregnant with our daughter and is such a fabulous mom to Patrick. I hope you were able to celebrate the moms in your life and remember those, like mine, who are only with us in our hearts.

What about this rain in May? Rain makes me think of our gardens and I was honored to have McShane's Landscape voted as #1 landscaper by the Salinas Valley Weekly's readers award. My humble thanks to those who voted.

Where was Steve this month you ask? I was at MANY events, sometimes multiple ones in the same day and we've tried to capture as many as we can below. At a glance, mark your calendars, hope to see you at any of these events -
  • Sunday, June 9th:  Wine, Cheese & Croquet 4-6pm at Alex Drollinger's
  • Tuesday, June 11th: Salinas Top Topics meeting 5:30-7pm at Amy Ish's
  • Thursday, June 13th: Marina Top Topics meeting 5:30-7pm at English Ale's
  • Danielle is due to deliver our daughter later this month and much anticipated paternity leave follows!

In service,

-- Steve McShane, Candidate for Monterey County Supervisor District 4

Celebrating Women at Impower's Mothers Day Luncheon and Danielle's Award!
Our schools celebrated at all levels!
I was privileged to emcee the Monterey County Office of Education's annual red carpet event on May 20th recognizing the Teacher of the Year, Meredith Jones of Mission Park. I was amazed at her accomplishments as well as those of the Classified School Employees of the Year and other distinguished teachers recognized. What an honor to be invited to participate in such an event.
Lots of graduations, but we would be remiss not to mention that May 18th was CSUMB 's largest graduating class in CSUMB history! They had to spread graduation to three ceremonies!

Wow! Congrats to all 2,348 graduating students! Well done!
The 6th annual recognition and appreciation of the Veteran's Service Program of Hartnell College was held May 17th and was a tremendous event honoring so many worthy in our community.
I was proud to join Salinas High class of 2019 in honoring Christina Chagnon & local muralist John Cerney for the addition & dedication of a new mural on the performing arts building.

Christina helped raise money for this new mural through her senior capstone project, a part of the newly implemented project-based learning curriculum. Well done!
Local Government Updates
The Association of Monterey Bay Area Governments , (AMBAG), a group that coordinates Monterey County issues, met on May 8th at the Marina library to discuss housing, jobs, energy watch and transportation. I serve on their Board of Directors and presented a report from the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council meeting. This is an important part of working at the county level to find and implement solutions.
As a member of the Board of Directors for the Community Human Services , a JPA or Joint Powers Authority which is a social services non-profit, I presented the Chief Executive Officer, Robin McCrae with a certificate recognizing her for the lifetime achievement award from the Child Abuse Prevention Council at the May 30th meeting. We discussed the receipt of several grants we were awarded, one of which will help fund the opening of a round the clock homeless shelter in Seaside and a street outreach program for youth up and down the Salinas Valley.
Monterey County joined First Solar, Hearst Ranch & Capital Dynamics to dedicate one of the largest solar installations in the United States!

Kudos to former County Supervisor  Simon Salinas , Del Rey Oaks Councilman  John Gaglioti , & County Supervisors  Christopher Lopez  &  Luis Alejo . Such a big win for locally produced green energy!

This project will provide power for up to 100,000 homes!
Proud to join Senator  Anna Caballero  & Assemblyman  Robert Rivas  in supporting a statewide effort to end homelessness at CSUMB Salinas City Center on May 18th. Incredible *Countywide* support for such an important cause with the ultimate goal of ending child poverty. So important to come together and work with grass roots organizations and local and state officials to address one of the top issues in our area. Together we make the difference!
CSUMB Salinas City Center hosted the Youth Arts Festival which was held on May 3rd. There were art workshops, music, film, art exhibitions, steam activities and more. This was a bilingual event and the inaugural year of the CSUMB Youth Arts Festival. Music was from YoSal, Visual Art from Salinas City Migrant Ed and Hijos del Sol Students and the nationally recognized Robotics Team of Monterey High.

Thank you Harry Wardwell for hosting a great fundraiser "Spring Soiree" at your lovely home.
Thank you to Margaret and Melissa Duflock for hosting a warm cookout in San Ardo.
Seaside's 4th Annual Palenke Arts Festival held this past weekend at Laguna Grande Park was spectacular. The local community really came together to produce a family fun filled display of a variety of live arts. Sambada, a popular, local Brazilian band was one of the featured performers as well as student performances.
