June 2021
Welcome to the 2021 Switzer Fellows!
We are thrilled to announce the recipients of the 2021 Switzer Fellowship. We are inspired by these emerging environmental leaders and proud to welcome them to the community of nearly 700 fellows in the Switzer Network.

Learn more about this year’s fellows here, and please join us in welcoming them to the Switzer Network.

If you wish to reach out individually to a new fellow, or if you have resources or connections that may be valuable for them, please contact Cora for an introduction.

Congratulations to this distinguished cohort of change-makers!

Alumni: We are encouraging new Switzer Fellows to use the Fellow Directory to network with alumni this summer, so please make sure your profile (especially your work information!) is updated. You can use this Google Form to submit changes.
Invitation to join the BIPOC Fellows Slack from Francisco Doñez
This is a periodic invitation to Switzer Fellows who are Black, Indigenous, or people of color (BIPOC) to join or revisit the BIPOC Fellows Slack Group. Here is a link to join

I know that everyone is incredibly busy, but please take a few minutes anyway to join (especially new 2021 Fellows!); visit and post an update if you haven't for a while, and visit the #introductions channel to welcome the 2021 BIPOC Fellows. And, if you don’t mind a few pings from friends, turn on Slack notifications so you can keep up with what’s happening!

If you have questions about using Slack, or have other questions or suggestions regarding the BIPOC Fellows group, let me know.

Happy summer!

Francisco Doñez, Ph.D.

Light pollution: an environmental issue that affects us all
Before humans invented fire, the only things that lit up the night were transient: the moon, the stars, and bioluminescent life (mostly fireflies). As advances in technology have made it cheaper and easier for us to light up our world, artificial light has pervaded urban, suburban and rural habitats alike -- where it often shines all night, all year-round.

Join us on Wednesday, July 21 for a discussion with Switzer Fellow Avalon C.S. Owens on how light pollution impacts people and the planet, and current recommendations of easy, energy-saving ways to protect the night. (Spoiler: The most important step is realizing that it is a problem in the first place!) Avalon will conclude by talking about her Ph.D. research into effects of light pollution on fireflies: charismatic flagship species capable of inspiring profound environmental progress.
