How old are your organs? To scientists’ surprise, organs are a mix of young and old cells

Vice President, Chief Science Officer and Professor Martin Hetzer , first author Rafael Arrojo e Drigo and colleagues discovered that the mouse brain, liver and pancreas contain populations of cells and proteins with extremely long lifespans—some as old as the organism itself. The team's methods could be applied to nearly any tissue in the body to provide valuable information about the lifelong function of nondividing cells and how cells lose control over the quality of proteins and cell structures during aging. The findings, demonstrating “age mosaicism,” were published in the journal Cell Metabolism .
Sugars that coat proteins are a possible drug target for pancreatitis
Salk Assistant Professor Dannielle Engle , a former Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Cancer Center postdoctoral fellow, studies how pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) can turn into pancreatic cancer. She focused on a chemical structure created by complex sugar molecules called CA19-9, which is elevated in patients with pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer and used as a biomarker. Now, Engle and her team provide the first evidence that CA19-9 contributes to the cause of the disease and suggest that blocking this complex sugar structure could help prevent the progression from pancreatitis to pancreatic cancer. Their findings were published in the journal Science .
