Our 10th Save of Christmas

When 17-year-old Sam arrived from the Rio Rancho, NM shelter on June 20, he seemed like a typical senior cat—easygoing, calm, and happiest when curled up for a nap. But shortly after he settled in, we noticed something concerning: Sam wobbled when he walked. We immediately scheduled a vet appointment, hoping it was something simple.

It wasn’t.



After examining him and running bloodwork, the vet grew concerned that Sam might have cancer and recommended additional testing. We quickly scheduled an ultrasound. But in the days that followed, Sam weakened dramatically. His wobble worsened. He struggled to walk. And despite our hopes, it became clear that Sam was nearing the end of his life.

After difficult conversations with our vet, we made the heartbreaking but compassionate decision to help Sam cross over.

Letting a senior go is the hardest part of our work—but we take comfort in knowing that no cat at June’s ever dies alone. Someone is always there, offering gentle hands, soft words, and love until their last breath. Sam was with us for only six days, but in that short time, he became part of our family. He lounged on the couch, sought out cozy spots for naps, and filled our home with the quiet sweetness that only a senior cat can.

Sam’s time with us was brief, but it mattered. This is why we do what we do: to ensure that every senior cat—whether they’re with us for years, months, or only days—has dignity, softness, and love at the end of their life.
