Tony and Maddie
Early in March, a woman shared a heartbreaking story. Her two aunts had been found dead in their Alamogordo, NM home, leaving behind 5 dogs and 7 cats. The dogs had been rescued, but the cats were at Alamogordo Animal Control and needed to a safe place to go. “Could we help?” she asked.
As a small senior cat rescue, we knew couldn’t take all 7 cats, but fortunately, Abigail Campbell, a volunteer in Alamogordo, agreed to assess the cats at the shelter, and send photos/videos.
One cat had a large swelling covering the whole left side of his face from his jaw up to his eyes. We had to get him out of the shelter and into care. Abigail to the rescue! She took him home and named him Tony. The local vet wasn’t sure of a diagnosis, so we arranged to get Tony to our vet at 4 Paws Pet Hospital in Albuquerque. Tony caught a ride on a transport to make the 3-hour journey. Sadly, Tony had an aggressive form of cancer that had invaded his nose and changed its architecture. We made the painful decision to help him cross over to the other side. Tony is now with his two owners, the aunts from Alamogordo.
We were heartbroken but turned our misery into another rescue. We saved one of Tony’s siblings, naming him Maddie. Maddie had a huge mat on his hind end that looked painful. Again, Abigail came to the rescue. She pulled Maddie from the shelter, took him home, shaved his mats, and bathed him. Underneath all that matted fur was a very gentle, calm, neutered kitty.
We took him to the vet, got him fixed up. He is now in a new foster home with volunteer Anna Edwards, just waiting for your call! Interested in adopting Maddie or another cat? Email us!
