Farewell to Bruce and Big Kitty

At the end of last year, we had to say goodbye to two of our special residents at Hannah’s House, Bruce and Big Kitty.

Bruce was a 14-year-old grey cat who grew up in a feral colony before an elderly couple adopted him as an adult. After his owners passed away, Bruce moved to June’s with two other cats, Jersey and Tailless. He enjoyed a peaceful life at June’s, finding comfort in solitude, warm beds, and security. Although our vet suspected cancer due to his declining health, and we planned an ultrasound, Bruce chose to pass away before it could happen. While it’s difficult not having the chance to say goodbye as we wished, we take comfort in knowing that Bruce felt loved.

Big Kitty, a 14-year-old long-haired, white with brown tabby markings cat, came to us from the Mountainair animal shelter with his sibling, Little Kitty, after their owner was removed from his home by Adult Protective Services. The friendly Big Kitty found a home at June’s, and he even knew his name and would trot over when called, eager for attention. After an ultrasound was performed, Big Kitty was diagnosed with intestinal lymphoma. His health declined quickly, and we made the decision to help him cross over with love.

At June’s, being with our seniors during their final days is at the heart of what we do. It’s one of the most difficult—and most meaningful—parts of our mission. While losing a cat never gets easier, it’s an emotional burden we gladly take on. We take comfort in knowing that Bruce and Big Kitty weren’t in a cage alone when they left this world. Instead, they were surrounded by love after spending their final days with comfort and love.

Seeking a Vet Appointment Volunteer

June’s is looking for someone to assist us with transporting cats to veterinary appointments. Many of the senior cats in our care need frequent vet visits. Often, several cats need appointments on the same day, making it hard for one person to handle the task alone. The volunteer cat transporter will play a crucial role in ensuring rescued cats reach veterinary appointments safely and on time.

If you are interested in supporting the welfare of June’s cats by handling their transportation needs for vet visits, please learn more and apply at this link.
