Help Our Seniors Fight Winter's Chill

Christmas and New Year’s Day have come and gone, and here we are in the heart of winter. It’s that cozy time of the year when we bundle up in coats, pile on blankets, and maybe sit by a warm fire. Our senior cats want to bundle up and get warm and cozy this time of year, too. Despite their fur coats, they have higher body temperatures to maintain and experience the cold more than we humans do.

To help our fragile seniors handle winter’s chill, we have plenty of blankets and sunny spots, but what our seniors really love are heating pads. In fact, they love them so much that they wear them out, and many of the heating pads require replacement each year.

Will you help keep our seniors warm and cozy this winter?

You can make an immediate difference by purchasing one of our cats’ preferred heating pads from our Amazon wishlist. It’s a simple way to give comfort, warmth, and love to a senior who needs it most.

A Happy Update on Ms. Kitty

Ms. Kitty is a 17-year-old lynx point Siamese cat we pulled from the Albuquerque Animal Welfare Department a few months ago. Her story, not an uncommon one, is that she was surrendered to the shelter because her owners couldn’t afford her medical care. Once Ms. Kitty arrived, we reached out to her owners multiple times to tell them that Ms. Kitty was doing well and that her medical issues were resolved. We offered to pay for her medical problems for the rest of her life. Sadly, after many attempts, we never heard back from Ms. Kitty's owners.

It was clear that Ms. Kitty was sad, so we did the only thing we could do—find her a loving furever foster home. One of our past adopters and loyal supporters, Denise Simon, called and offered to foster her. We were ecstatic—we knew Ms. Kitty would be very loved in her new foster home.

Denise already had two resident cats, and she knew introductions needed to go slowly. Denise did everything right. She put Ms. Kitty in her own room with a baby gate, and after a few days, she opened the gate to allow Ms. Kitty to explore the home under supervision. Denise kept her cats in another room so that there wouldn't be any issues. With lots of patience and love, Ms. Kitty met the two resident cats, and everything went well. Ms. Kitty now believes she owns the entire downstairs, including every cat bed she can find!

Ms. Kitty’s new home is a wonderful example of how lots of love and patience can make a huge difference when introducing a senior cat to a household that already has cats. Ms. Kitty is getting along with her new family and has even started chasing some cat toys around.

Lance: A Heartwarming Update

We wanted to provide an update on Lance—the gentle, loving black cat who had severely infected eyes. When we first learned about Lance, his caregiver was struggling and wasn’t able to give Lance the care he desperately needed. Though we didn’t have space at Hannah’s House at the time, our Help Meowt program ensured Lance got the veterinary care he needed. We placed him on our waitlist until a room opened up.

We learned that Lance’s caregiver hadn’t been able to keep up with the treatment plan, and Lance’s eyes were worsening rapidly. We knew then that waiting was no longer an option.

Once Lance arrived at June’s, everything changed. With proper treatment, his eyes began to heal quickly. At his first vet visit, the plan was to remove at least one eye, but after weeks of steady care, Lance’s eye has been spared. While his eyes will require continuous monitoring for recurrence of the infection, Lance is settling in beautifully, feeling safer and more comfortable every day. And most importantly, he is finally out of pain.

Lance’s purrs tell us all we need to know: he’s healing and hopeful again. And we’re hopeful, too—we think Lance would be perfect for our Senior Cats for Senior Laps program. Even though sweet Lance is a big boy (14 lbs.), he is a gentle giant and would make a loving companion for a senior citizen or a home without loud noise, children, or other pets.

If you’re interested in opening your heart and your home to sweet Lance, please fill out an application.

Every gift, in any amount, helps us improve the lives of cats like Lance and Ms. Kitty. Thank you for your kindness and generosity!
