June's 10th Anniversary

Ten years ago in March 2013, June’s Senior Cat Rescue became a charity, and our journey to save senior cats from certain death in shelters began. What an amazing ride it has been!

Some of our cats have been adopted into forever homes, while others were held tightly in our arms as they transitioned to the other side. We spent more time at the vet office than at adoption events, but we wouldn’t change a thing. We cried many tears over the ones we lost and drove many miles to save the ones we could. We have saved, and will continue to save, the most vulnerable and forgotten.

As we celebrate the past 10 years, we can’t help but look forward to the next 10. We hope to expand in the coming years and "cat" wait for the journey ahead. We know with you, our amazing supporters, we will save even more cats! That’s what makes life so sweet!

Gratefully,

Janet

Rescue & Help Meowt

During our 10 years, we saved 422 senior cats and helped many more through our Help Meowt Program, where we kept senior cats in their homes by paying for essential vet care their owners couldn’t afford. Because we provide lifelong care, our numbers may not be as high as other rescues, but helping cats and their people and providing sanctuary makes us unique.

Special Thank You to YOU

Through it all, we have felt your positive thoughts, good vibes, support, and love. Your warm embrace surrounded us from miles away. We could not have done these past 10 years without YOU! Words can’t express how we feel on this momentous occasion. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the last 10 years and the next 10 to come. Meow!

TNVR Program Helps Protect Community Cats

Recently, our Help Meowt program helped TNVR 11 cats in a community that lacks low cost spay/neuter resources.

What’s TNVR? It stands for Trap, Neuter (or spay), Vaccinate, and Release.

TNVR programs help community cats—both feral (unsocialized) and stray (socialized)—by eliminating their ability to reproduce and decreasing the likelihood that they will become sick and/or transmit disease. TNVR also helps reduce injury to pet and community cats because neutering cats decreases roaming & territorial fighting.

Through Help Meowt, we were also able to help a badly injured tom cat who needed antibiotics and additional care.

Local families will feed and look after those 11 cats, now with peace of mind knowing that the cats are healthy and won’t be making any more kittens!

Imagine how many kittens, grandkittens, and great-grandkittens the 11 cats we helped might have created together. Help Meowt, indeed!

Tony and Maddie

Early in March, a woman shared a heartbreaking story. Her two aunts had been found dead in their Alamogordo, NM home, leaving behind 5 dogs and 7 cats. The dogs had been rescued, but the cats were at Alamogordo Animal Control and needed to a safe place to go. “Could we help?” she asked.

As a small senior cat rescue, we knew couldn’t take all 7 cats, but fortunately, Abigail Campbell, a volunteer in Alamogordo, agreed to assess the cats at the shelter, and send photos/videos.

One cat had a large swelling covering the whole left side of his face from his jaw up to his eyes. We had to get him out of the shelter and into care. Abigail to the rescue! She took him home and named him Tony. The local vet wasn’t sure of a diagnosis, so we arranged to get Tony to our vet at 4 Paws Pet Hospital in Albuquerque. Tony caught a ride on a transport to make the 3-hour journey. Sadly, Tony had an aggressive form of cancer that had invaded his nose and changed its architecture. We made the painful decision to help him cross over to the other side. Tony is now with his two owners, the aunts from Alamogordo.

We were heartbroken but turned our misery into another rescue. We saved one of Tony’s siblings, naming him Maddie. Maddie had a huge mat on his hind end that looked painful. Again, Abigail came to the rescue. She pulled Maddie from the shelter, took him home, shaved his mats, and bathed him. Underneath all that matted fur was a very gentle, calm, neutered kitty.

We took him to the vet, got him fixed up. He is now in a new foster home with volunteer Anna Edwards, just waiting for your call! Interested in adopting Maddie or another cat? Email us!

The story of Tony and Maddie reminds us to make a plan for our pets in case they outlive us. Please consider creating a will or a trust for your pet. Questions? Contact us via email.
