@ the MACC in June 2018
It's the season for summer fun and festivals on the island, and we've kicked it off at the beginning of June with a huge ArT=Mixx, which is our signature FREE event where everybody can mix-and-mingle with the arts and more than 3000 people attended to do just that! Then we ended the month with a perennial favorite: the Kī Hō'alu Festival, which is our annual FREE slack key guitar celebration on the last Sunday of June, with another 3000+ people attending. (And a completely different mix of audience, by the way!)
Notic . e we use the words FREE and FUN often when describing what's happening at the MACC. That's because we offer so many free events: the always-free art exhibits in the gallery ...the Starry Night Cinema free family film nights ... the free 'ukulele and slack key events... the free 'Big Game' screenings. Overall, we have counted more than 76,000 attendees coming through the gates for free events in the last fiscal year which is almost a third of our annual total visitors. That's a lot of FREE things to do and see and a lot of diversity in things to do!
Have a happy Fourth of July holiday, and I look forward to seeing you @ the MACC for more summer fun in July and August: check the event brochure link below or visit our website to fill in your own calendar of events. And don't let the fun stop with summer we've got FUN, FREE and DIVERSE happenings all year 'round @ the MACC!

On Saturday, June 9, it was ALL SYSTEMS GO for an out-of-this-world Art=Mixx evening with an outer space theme! There were close encounters of many kinds: a spaceship landing onstage ... live performances ... dancing, singing, and aerialist artists...supersonic DJs...aliens... a fashion show ...makeup, costumes, and other bedazzlements, plus more music, more dancing, more FUN for all! See for yourself:

Maui Kī Hō'alu Festival
Sunday, June 24th marked the day of the 27th annual FREE festival of slack key guitar music. More than two dozen musicians took the stage in this whole-afternoon tribute to the mellow music of Hawai'i ... including names both already-famous and soon-to-be-famous in the genre. The 5th Annual MAMo at the MACC Wearable Art Show was held at the beginning of June in Yokouchi Pavilion with a dozen Hawai'i designers showing off their current lines, runway and all! Emcees Vicky Takamine Holt and Robert Cazimero graciously contributed hula and music, as well as their usual engaging banter to introduce the designers.

We have just completed our second summer of arts fun for Maui kids in our CROSS CURRENTS program! Building from last year’s success with blending traditional and contemporary art forms, this year we focused on the synergy created from melding different types of performance art - such as drama/theater, spoken word poetry, and dance/movement. The focus was on supporting kids to collaborate and tell their own stories. The MACC's arts education department again partnered up with Boys & Girls Club to provide days full of performance art classes at the MACC. Because of this successful partnership, the MACC is looking for other youth organizations to partner with, to provide a variety of youth meaningful art experiences on Maui.
Originally conceived as a program for students, we soon realized there is no age limit on learning about the arts! So, CROSS CURRENTS classes for adults were formed, focusing on different performing art forms for those who wanted to increase their skills or try out a new medium/genre. The pilot program for adults, conducted January through April 2018, gave us valuable insight as to what kind of classes will interest the adults in our community. The next adult CROSS CURRENTS will focus on both arts experiences for adults and a 'season pass' for culturally-enriching performance, giving adults the chance to socialize and exchange their thoughts on what they watched together.
