Laguna Beach Cultural Arts Center

Part of LBCAC's Fifth Annual Juneteenth Celebration

Join the Laguna Beach Cultural Arts Center for a special screening of the Academy Award-winning documentary Summer of Soul, a powerful celebration of music, culture, history, and the enduring spirit of community.

Directed by Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson, Summer of Soul uncovers the remarkable story of the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, a landmark event that brought together some of the greatest artists of the era, including Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, Mahalia Jackson, Sly and the Family Stone, Gladys Knight & The Pips, and The Staple Singers.

More than a concert film, Summer of Soul is a moving testament to the power of artistic expression, cultural memory, and the importance of preserving stories that deserve to be seen, heard, and celebrated. The film captures a moment in history that remained largely hidden for decades, while revealing the joy, creativity, resilience, and excellence that have long shaped American culture.

As part of LBCAC's Fifth Annual Juneteenth Celebration, this screening honors the holiday's deeper themes of freedom, remembrance, perseverance, and the ongoing contributions of African American artists, thinkers, and cultural leaders.

Guests are also invited to experience LBCAC's Juneteenth-themed art exhibition featuring Allison Allen and Thomas Finn, whose work explores themes of identity, heritage, resilience, and the human spirit.

Presented in the intimate setting of the Laguna Beach Cultural Arts Center and experienced through the venue's exceptional QSC sound system, generously donated by QSC founder Pat Quilter, this screening offers audiences the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in one of the most inspiring music documentaries ever made.

Come celebrate music, history, art, and community through a film that reminds us why culture matters and why these stories continue to inspire generations.

Because some stories are too important to remain unheard.
