UPS FOUNDATION FUNDS JA PROGRAMS
Junior Achievement of Western Massachusetts was once again fortunate to receive a $7300 grant from the UPS Foundation to support JA programs in Western Massachusetts. This year Arlynn Henderson from UPS served as a JA Volunteer, discussing personal finance in two JA Finance Park Virtual classes at Chicopee High School and volunteering in a Reverse Job Shadow event for Chicopee High students, helping them create a budget.
The funds also supported 6 JA programs at Lincoln School in Springfield, MA. All of Lincoln's kindergarten and first graders got to participate in JA Ourselves or JA Our Families, through the generous financial support of the UPS Foundation.
This summer 37 youth engaged in the JA Summer BEE (Business & Entrepreneurial Exploration) Program also participated in JA Be Entrepreneurial, thanks to the UPS Foundation. One of the activities in the program is to craft a product from pipe cleaners and this year one of the product ideas became a reality. S.N.A.P. Frames, was designed with wooden, handpainted frames and twine, to hang photos.
"Junior Achievement of Western Massachusetts is very fortunate to have the continued support of the UPS Foundation. They have funded programs for thousands of youth in our area over the past years." noted Jennifer Connolly, President of JA of Western MA.

JA SUMMER BEE PROGRAM HAS SUCCESSFUL SECOND YEAR
|
JAWM recently completed it's second summer program. An average of 37 students from 6th-12th grade participated this year. The students heard from Guest Speakers like Ethan LaFrenier from Hampshire Marketing; Sheila Coon from Hot Oven Cookies, and created Dr. Seuss like art with
Randi Steiger, Artventures for Kids. Volunteers from Eastman Chemical shared STEM activites and the students learned about local businesses by taking Walking Tours of downtown. They visited iHeart Media; MassLive; Women's Fund, The Sheraton and St. Germain Investments. One student noted that "The Job Shadow is my favorite field trip because of the fact we learn in real time how these companies became huge. You also get to network and earn a lot of vital contacts. Because of the Job Shadow I may be getting an internship once I'm in college. I also learned a lot more about marketing and investments; and why they are so important to have, even as a regular person."

JA INTRODUCES TEEN ACCELERATOR PROGRAM
JA of Western Massachusetts introduced a TEEN ACCELERATOR Program this summer, for teens who had previous experience with the JA Company Program, either through last year's JA Summer Program or during the 2017-18 school year. The pilot program was funded by an anonymous donation and ran for 4 weeks, from July 9 to August 3. Jeremy Casey, a successful Entrepreneur and Adjunct Professor of Entrepreneurship at Elms College's Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership presented the program. Five students took part, attending three intensive hours of entrepreneurial education each day, four days a week, and the program culminated in a Trade Fair and Pitch Competition. The Student Companies in the Accelerator were BMC (Beautful Motivational Candles); Optical Pro and Krafty Kreations. One student noted,
"
I want to make my business a start up and the Acceleration program helped me realize that, because to be honest I wasn't going to continue with it. I really want to make this a legit product that people can buy because before I was selling my products to the wrong ideal customer, but thanks to this class I learned who my ideal customer is and I'm going to pursue my dream now."
On a scale of 1(terrible) to 5(outstanding) for the value of the program- all of the students gave the program a 5. The goal of the program was to taking inspired teen entrepreneurs to the next level and help them invision thei JA Student Company as a thriving enterprise.
