"Stigma" is a simple two-syllable word, yet carries the weight of negative and often unfair beliefs that we hold about each other. Perhaps most tragically, stigmas lock people into stereotyped boxes and deny us all the right to be our authentic and whole selves.

This powerful book confronts stereotype development, shows how to undo the processes and effects of stigma, and explains how we can radically change cultural thinking on the individual, interpersonal, and societal levels to put an end to stigmatization once and for all.

Dr. Seele believes we must begin to stand up to stigma and set an example for future generations.

Women's Empowerment Breakfast
The American Cancer Society's estimates for cervical cancer in the United States for 2017 are:
  • About 12,820 new cases of invasive cervical cancer will be diagnosed.
  • About 4,210 women will die from cervical cancer.
Join The Balm In Gilead for a Women's Empowerment Breakfast on Friday, October 20th in Richmond, VA. This event will empower women with the information on how be healthy.

Early Detection is Key

Breast cancer is the second most common kind of cancer in women. About 1 in 8 women born today in the United States will get breast cancer at some point. The good news is that most women can survive breast cancer if it's found and treated early.

A mammogram - the screening test for breast cancer - can help find breast cancer early when it's easier to treat. Every person should know the symptoms and signs of breast cancer, and any time an abnormality is discovered, it should be investigated by a healthcare professional. Most people who have breast cancer symptoms and signs will initially notice only one or two, and the presence of these symptoms and signs do not automatically mean that you have breast cancer.

Pink Sunday - October 15th

During the month, The Balm In Gilead will be recognizing "Pink Sunday" on Sunday, October 15, 2017 in partnership with The Food and Drug Administration Office of Women's Health (OWH). OWH launched the Pink Ribbon Sunday Mammography Awareness Program to educate African Americans regarding early detection of breast cancer through mammography. The program strives to reduce breast cancer health disparities by providing community leaders like you with free resources to develop mammography awareness programs tailored to the needs of your region.

The kit includes  Pink Sunday Guide,  Mammography Fact Sheets and  "Save the Date" Mammography Postcards.

Pumpkin Bread

My grandmother clipped this pumpkin bread recipe from a magazine over 50 years ago. It's the oldest recipe in my family and also the most cherished. In fact, one of my clearest childhood memories is baking the loaves with my mom and then carting them off to every neighborhood potluck and holiday party. Click here for this delicious recipe.
