Hello fellow Optimist,

It is hard to believe we are entering the 6th month of our Optimist year! That’s almost half way through the year, with so much yet to accomplish.

But this month, I want to focus on our Optimist International Annual Convention, being held in Arlington, Virginia, this year.

Dates:

  • Friday, June 30 – Board Meeting
  • Saturday, July 1 – Governor-Elect and Governor Training
  • Sunday, July 2 to Tuesday, July 4 – Convention
  • Wednesday, July 5 – Optional Tours of Washington and Arlington area

The Convention Committee and staff are working hard to make this event one of the best member experiences in years. You will be inspired by Amy Downs story of being the last person pulled out alive of the 1995 Oklahoma Bombing. You will be entertained by a show on Saturday evening, fireworks on July 4, and the large number of tours the day after the convention. Plus, your district dinner, the service project to support another non-profit organization, trivia night and the President’s gala. You will be informed about what’s happening within our organization, and from outside our organization as we explore living Optimism as a philosophy of life. And there will be fellowship as you see Optimist friends from outside your own boundaries – or make new friends!

Plan on attending your OI Convention for an inspirational, entertaining, informative and friend-filled time. Hotel rooms are limited, so book your room now so you are not disappointed.

Join us in Arlington to explore all the opportunities in front of us!

Spotlight

In February, First Lady Penny and I traveled to South Carolina to a club event and to the North Carolina Conference and we discovered two more fantastic projects that Optimist do.

Children’s Cancer Partners of the Carolinas: This organization started with one Optimist Club in South Carolina helping one family dealing with a child with cancer. It is now supported by a number of Optimist clubs in both North and South Carolina, and they have helped more than 2,000 families overcome distance and cost barriers, so their child’s care is timely and complete. Their help for children battling cancer is immediate, comprehensive and continuous until the child reaches age 21. Check them out online at www.childrenscancerpartners.org

Boys and Girls Homes: This project is located on Lake Waccamaw in the North Carolina East District and consists of 6 cottages, each sponsored by a separate service organization (Optimists, Rotary, Lions, Kiwanis, Jaycees and Civitan). What a fantastic example of non-profit organizations working together! These cottages are used by children who must be separated from their families, and this becomes their new home. During the conference, one Optimist club announced they were committing $10,000 plus labor to upgrade the Optimist cottage (painting, flooring, kitchen upgrades, etc.). You can learn more about this fantastic initiative at www.boysandgirlshomes.org.
