A message from the Executive Director
Welcome, fall! It is hard to believe that we are three quarters of the way through Just-A-Start's 50th anniversary year, but our days have been full with programs, projects, and celebrations. In the summer months, students approached their graduations with hope and determination, finishing up their coursework, internships, and resumes. Staff in the YouthBuild, Biomedical, and IT Careers Programs helped students write cover letters, complete their tests, and plan their next steps, and we welcomed many local professionals as volunteers to help practice mock interviews.

In our Real Estate department, we continue to make excellent progress on several properties around Cambridge. In partnership with the City of Cambridge, students in the YouthBuild program have been completing a full renovation on a home in East Cambridge that will then be sold affordably through the city's First-Time Homebuyer Program. At 50 York Street, construction crews have been hard at work rebuilding the homes that were lost in the 2016 fire - remarkable progress since the groundbreaking ceremony less than one year ago! If you find yourself in East Cambridge, we invite you to walk past these properties and see all of the exciting changes.

We are looking forward to many events in the coming months-watch your inboxes for the invitations!-and our 50th Anniversary Gala is no exception. The event will bring people together from all facets of Just-A-Start's fifty-year history to celebrate and raise a glass to JAS's future. We welcome you to join in by purchasing a Gala ticket. Do you know someone who might like to learn more about JAS's work in the community? Invite them to join you!

We hope to see you soon.

Sincerely,
Deborah Ruhe
Executive Director

2018 Graduations

In August and September, we proudly awarded youth and adult students their graduation certificates!
  • 21 YouthBuild students earned their high school credentials and celebrated in caps and gowns onstage at the Cambridge Public Library.
  • The Federal Reserve Bank of Boston hosted the 13 adult graduates of the inaugural cohort of the IT Careers Program as family and friends cheered on their successes.
  • Finally, 16 graduates of the Biomedical Careers Program were congratulated by Mayor Marc McGovern in program graduation host Sanofi Genzyme's new building.

Congratulations to the Class of 2018!

Looking Back, Looking Forward

Did you know that JAS owns 598 units of affordable housing in Cambridge? As you walk through the city streets, you may not realize that JAS apartments are nearby! In August, JAS hosted a walkabout tour of several properties in The Port and previewed upcoming real estate projects. Afterwards, guests enjoyed food, drinks, and conversation at Lamplighter Brewing Company to celebrate the launch of their custom-brewed 1968 Just-A-Start beer!

Community Events

Every summer, JAS's Resident Services department coordinates cookouts for residents, friends, and families to beat the heat and have fun. Community members enjoyed a BBQ at the 402 Rindge Tower and Family Fun Day on the Linwood Green, complete with dunk tanks, art projects, games, giveaways, and a raffle! These annual events are a highlight of every year, celebrating the community spirit at the heart of Just-A-Start. A Fall Festival in September was a 50th anniversary addition to the summer's programming, as residents from across Cambridge came together in Inman Square to pop popcorn, play YouthBuild-designed arcade games, and watch a 1968 movie after sundown. Thank you to everyone who came out to socialize!
