Practice Directives - STAFF
|
- SPEND TIME - Arrive at least 30-45 minutes prior to practice. This provides a great opportunity to spend time with players (and do individual development/film work). The 15 minutes directly following practice is also an important period during which to spend time with the guys. As a staff, we should touch all 12-15 players between the end of practice and the time they leave the gym.
- ENERGY - Bring a high level of energy to practice (our energy & mood will affect their energy/mood).
- PRACTICE HABITS - Keep a close eye on practice habits, including coachability, reaction to calls/no calls, reaction to adversity, body language, and interaction with teammates. Go after guys when necessary.
- COMMUNICATION - Constantly encourage and remind guys to talk more. Reward guys that are doing well with communication.
- DURATION - Stay in the head coaches ear about the duration of practice. The head coach can tend to go too long at times.
- GAME SITUATIONS - When you have a team in practice, coach them up as if it is a game situation while also understanding what we're trying to get accomplished. We need to teach our guys the urgency of whatever we're working on and coach them to do what we'd want them to do in a game.
- LATE GAME SITUATIONS - We all need to study the late game playbook. We need to be familiar with what we are doing in various situations so that we can work on them in practice.

Hornets’ priority is 'player development.' Here's how new coach James Borrego defines it
By: Rick Bonnell
|
- In NBA-speak, "player development" is like world peace: There’s universal support for the concept, but great divergence in how it should be achieved.
- You don’t draft in the late 20s or worse, as the Spurs have done constantly over the past 20 years, and still mine the Tony Parker’s and Manu Ginobili’s unless you’re great at improving the guys you drafted.
- Triano said the most important element of player development, even with a team deep in rebuilding mode, is not sending the message to young players there aren’t playing-time consequences to their mistakes.
- Consider how Borrego described his mentor, Spurs legendary coach Gregg Popovich: “He does a great job of holding players accountable – of coaching them, but still loving them – and I will take that with me.”
- I asked Borrego to detail his approach to player development. What I heard in reply was a “less-is-more” concept: Don’t flood young players with so much correction they are overwhelmed, but still hold them to expectations.
- “We get lost as coaches in trying to create this incredible player overnight, and we end up losing our player. ...We’ll identify a few areas, two or three areas, that we want to focus on right now in the summertime and we’ll work on those.”

College basketball rule changes: What will happen with the NCAA's new rules for recruiting and the NBA Draft
By:
Matt Norlander
- It's likely that within the next two-to-four years, the NCAA will adopt amendments on some of these new bylaws because of the new territory it's striding into. Wednesday's big announcement isn't etched in tablets.
- "If people are concerned right now that this is not right, they should be optimistic that if it's not right, if it proves not to be right, we'll adjust accordingly," Gavitt said. "But if it proves to be right, then we won't."
- The current situation allows for underclassmen that are are in college and testing the waters to engage with an agent once the season is over -- and after they request an evaluation from the NBA Undergraduate Advisory Committee," Gavitt said. "Those are the only prospects that can access an agent currently.
- If there were instances where a player returned to school, only to discover there were no scholarships left at that school, would he be free to transfer elsewhere and have immediate eligibility?
- As of now, no. The transfer rules would still be in effect. The player could transfer but would have to sit a year. So could the rule change? That's not known.
- Do we know where the four regional camps will be held at the end of July? Will one of those four be for the best of the best?
- Gavitt said there will be a bid process similar to the NCAA Tournament for colleges to try and win the right to host the end-of-July camps. College campuses, using college facilities, will be the exclusive venues for the final recruiting weekend of the summer. As noted in this story, it's expected that approximately 2,500 high schoolers will be invited. Who goes where is not yet fleshed out.
- The NCAA will also pay the expenses of one parent or guardian of each prospect to attend.
- "There's going to be educational components to it as well, and I don't mean just A's and B's and C's education. Life skills, education about their recruitment and the eligibility process. I would imagine education about the pre-draft process, so that prospects and their families get complete information about every level of the game so they can make informed decisions.
- So what's happening at the end of June with these high school camps and how are they different from July?
- These camps will be held pending approval from the National Federation of State High School Associations.
- The NCAA is not paying a dime for these June camps to be held. The finances will fall on the states and their high school associations. Some states will wind up being much bigger destination spots than many others because of how well their events are run. But Gavitt noted that there's not a prohibition on states joining forces.
- "This was an NABC recommendation, the intent of which from the NABC and the Commission is to re-engage high school coaches in the recruiting process," Gavitt saids. "Not just in June, but in the April mid-week opportunities.
- You might be asking: Why were all these changes put forth with so many details still to be determined? It was the accelerated timeline. Mark Emmert charged the Commission with recommendations by the springtime. The Commission knew its recommendations would need to be voted into action by Aug. 8.

3-Man Ball-Screen Reads:
3-man ball-screens are a staple in today’s game because you have multiple threats. The ball-handler must execute coming off the screen “shoulder to hip” & attack the screener’s defender in order to “engage 2.” Advanced guards see the floor to answer: who is helping on the roll? Defenses can help out of the ball-side corner or the weak-side corner. This is a great example of Texas helping with the weak-side corner & defending the shake action (player lifting to the wing from the ball-side corner). Collin Sexton engages 2 players with the ball which forces Matt Coleman to “hold” long enough to create a closeout situation.
