Legendary University of North Carolina Head Coach, Dean Smith, was famous for saying: “I would never recruit a player who yells at his teammates, disrespected his high school coach, or scores 33 points a game and his team goes 10-10.” There are so many pieces of the puzzle that play a role in the evaluation process. Every factor within a player’s evaluation contributes to a bigger picture which can then contribute to a decision. While we are enamored by talent, we need to consider that when we talk about championship teams, we rarely talk about talent. We talk about character, substance, toughness and drive. There are enough talented players to go around. The key is finding the right talented players. College Coaches separate themselves by having an ability to predict & dictate the future. It is important to keep in mind during the evaluation process that players change. Their games change, bodies change, and they change the minute they get into a new environment. What they see now is not exactly what you will have in 1,2, 3 or 4 years. - Two great indicators of a prospect: ·        Does he/she produce in high school? ·        Does he/she improve in high school? o   The ability to produce and the ability to improve are two things that typically translate to the next level. - Are you able to say the statement: “he/she comes to play every single night?” - Evaluating a player under game pressure: ·        How much does the magnitude of the situation change them? - The most underrated quality a player can have is versatility: ·        Can he/she guard multiple positions? ·        Can he/she play multiple spots in the offense? ·        Can he/she play in any style of game? ·        Can he/she play with any other 4 players on the floor and function? - Perception is often reality. Coaches read into: ·        Body language ·        Behavior in huddles ·        Communication with teammates ·        Treatment towards officials ·        Rapport with coaches/staff - Coaches never want to bring in a player that they need to make excuses for or need to root for.  - Focus on what a player can do vs what they can’t do. If they are bringing a lot of positives to the table, chances are, that will outweigh the negatives. - Evaluating a players flaws : ·        Are they flaws that can be improved? ·        More importantly, does he/she have the desire to improve them?

DRILLS OF THE MONTH

Nate Oats - Shoot-A-Way Drills

5-Spot, 4 minute Shooting Make 10 from 5 spots vs. time Anything after 50 is considered (+). Any number under 50 is considered (-). +17 is the record Can divide into 2 teams Penetrate & Kick - Baseline Drift Start with kick down to the corner Attack the closeout for baseline drift Work both sides of the floor so they have to make the baseline pass with both hands Make this pass with 1-hand avoiding the help-side rotation Add transition defense by adding cone inside half-court that shooter has to sprint around after the baseline drift Penetrate & Kick - Slot Skip If teams take away the baseline drift = Slot Skip is the next read Can jump to make this pass to throw over top of the defense. Must jump straight up & down to avoid charge. Penetrate & Kick - Kick Down Defender helps early = Kick Down Make dribble move at the cone & attack the paint Simulates help out of the ball-side corner. Work on making pass with outside hand. Penetrate & Kick - Lift Lift out of the corner when your defense collapses to help on the big rolling Work on making this pass across your body Penetrate & Kick - Loop Defender helps late = Loop Ball-handler will get deeper penetration in the paint Loop = downhill drive to paint because the catch is on the run. Defense is in a disadvantage 2 on 1 - Game Like Shooting Break into 2 v 2 2 on 1 situations on the backside. Must read the defender/closeout. Options are to "shoot or 1-more" depending on the defender Works on decision making, executing passes & making game like shots Play for 3 min. Must get a stop to get on defense.

What is Leadership? - Jack Clark

Jack Clark, Head Coach of Cal Rugby, lays out his definition of leadership and how his team's axiom, "Expect Everyone to Lead" has helped the Golden Bears win 23 National Championships in his 33 years as Head Coach. Authority has hijacked leadership. "Leadership is something the newest person in the organization has. All the way to our star player." "I believe in chain of command. Point our noses in the same direction. But I don't subscribe to the idea that the 'minority leads the majority'." Leadership = the ability the make those around you better and more productive. You don't have to be the boss to do that. You are not born with it. It's a skill that you acquire over time. We expect everyone to lead. "I have a responsibility to make those around me better." 'You gotta prove it every day': Tom Brady shares leadership wisdom that works on and off the field   By: David Novak He's an authentic leader who understands who he is and never tries to be anyone else, all the while remaining thoughtful, humble, and down to earth in spite of all of his success. Before you can be an effective leader, you have to think like a great one. How you view things dramatically affects the action you take. Stop focusing on the number of reps and start focusing on making every rep the best you can. In fact, make every rep the best anyone could do. What is your mindset? Is it, "Poor me. I'm not getting a chance?" Or is it, "Whatever chance I get, I'm going to make it great?" Once you have the right team in place, you have to know how to motivate them. The more you can get inside the heads of your team, the better you're able to influence them in a positive way. His goal is to find the best way to motivate his teammates, and he knows that one size doesn't fit all. Most players respond well to role clarity and encouragement. Leaders and their teams are motivated when they know what they're doing matters. Their hearts and minds ignite when they are driving toward a powerful vision of the future. Tom told me he "… tries to be better today than yesterday, continuing to change, evolve and grow by surrounding myself with fun people I can learn a lot from." Link to Article

Key to Hawks' Team Play: Nourish the Individual By: Scott Cacciola Spend some time around the Hawks, and one word continues to surface: vitamins. It is a metaphor for their philosophy. They take their vitamins when they hit the cold tub for treatment. They take their vitamins when they lift weights. They take their vitamins when they study film and watch their diets. Above all, they take their vitamins when they head to the gym for individual skill sessions with Budenholzer’s assistants. Budenholzer, who acknowledged appropriating the vitamin concept from a fellow assistant with the Spurs, seeks consistent improvement. In Atlanta, he has his players spend as much time working one-on-one with members of his staff as they do in traditional team practice settings. “It’s the difference between being in a class with 30 other kids and getting one-on-one tutoring for 20 or 30 minutes.” The message is uniform, and the coaches try not to overload the players with information. “It’s not like we say, ‘Here’s 10 things for you to work on,’ ” Atkinson said. “No, here’s one or two.” For Kent Bazemore, most of his vitamin sessions have centered on his reconfigured shooting stroke. Bazemore had an elongated motion, and the ball tended to come off his ring finger and pinkie. Sullivan and Bazemore worked on tightening his form. Once Bazemore improved his consistency, he began to shoot against defenders. In February, Bazemore graduated to pull-up jumpers.   Link to Article

Just Hoops Drills: 1 v 1 Side-by-Side

1 v 1 Side-by-Side “Create contact to create separation.” Great drill working on offensive player creating contact with their lower body to gain & keep an advantage & finishing vs resistance in the paint. Most players are not comfortable with body to body contact so we must create situations where contact takes place. Overtime they will begin to incorporate it into their game. This drill will help your players expand their abilities to finish at the rim. Drill starts with both players side-by-side with their feet touching in a low athletic stance. The drill starts on the offensive players first dribble. Key point of emphasis is the offensive players 1st step must be inside to create contact and get their top foot over the defender’s top foot.
