Sports Show Host Examines the Dangers of Gas in Homes and Buildings After Tragic Explosion - Sage Welch – The National Building Electrification Network and Sunstone Strategies – “The cause of a house explosion that killed five people in Plum PA on Saturday is still being investigated, but many are speculating it was caused by gas. We spotted discussion of this topic on the Pat McAfee Show (a very influential sports talk show…)” On his show McAfee said ”This is a national thing that I don’t think ever gets talked about, that we are kind of experiencing in the absolute worst way. It is said from 2002 to 2021 there’s been 680 natural gas pipeline explosions that has resulted in 260 deaths, 1,109 injured and $11.04 Billion dollar losses…” 6-minutevideo link here.

Pat McAfee, sportscaster from Plum, PA said this is “the 3rd time this has happened in our hometown since 2008”
800 Foot Drilling Permit for Columbia U. Project – Business Wire – “The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, Division of Mineral Resources (DMR) has granted Columbia University a permit to drill a closed-loop geothermal test bore to a depth of 800 feet, the first such permit to drill to this depth, for this purpose, in the State of New York. Due to the comparatively smaller surface footprints available on typically constrained Manhattan project sites, deeper bore depths are required for optimal system performance and efficiency… DMR permitting was coordinated by the engineering firm Salas O’Brien, with the support of Brightcore Energy LLC (both NY-GEO members).” Article link here.

Sierra Club Urges Comments on the National Fuel Gas Long Term Plan – David Alicea – NY Field Manager, Sierra Club - “National Fuel Gas is the main fracked gas utility in Western New York and has been one of the main funders of pro-fracked gas efforts spending its profits to lobby against climate policy that would phase out gas, funding ad campaigns, and spreading misinformation. As the first utility to move through a long-term planning process, we cannot let them set a dangerous precedent by locking in fracked gas for the next 20 years.” Submit your comment and ask Governor Hochul and the Public Service Commission to hold National Fuel Gas accountable to our climate law.
NetZeroPLUS Canada Launches – Bill Eggertson – President – “NetZeroPLUS Canada was incorporated to accelerate the transition to renewable energy and to lower GHG emissions in Canada and around the world. The founding principles of the organization, which launched last week, include:
- As our economy electrifies, we must standardize energy nomenclature and quantify all energy as kW / kWh so factual comparisons can be made between supply options. This means discarding arcane energy terms such as calorie, Btu, barrel of oil, horsepower and more.
- Thermal energy produced from the ground by a heat pump must be recognized as renewable energy that is fully dispatchable (ie: batteries not required). Failure to count ALL energy outputs and ALL energy inputs decreases the ability to track production & consumption, and allows greenwashing to obfuscate issues and delay positive action on emission reductions.
- Recognition that a heat pump produces renewable energy (as well as reduces emissions & operating costs) will provide an important incentive for homeowners to take direct action and do the right thing."
See the NetZeroPLUS website here.
The Importance of Tax Credit Transferability – Jeff St. John - Canary Media - "At its peak prior to the new law, the U.S. tax-credit investment market processed about $20 billion in clean-energy projects per year. Under the Inflation Reduction Act, that annual figure is expected to be at least two to three times larger, according to multiple analyses. To incentivize project developers to build out clean energy as quickly as the climate crisis demands, the tax-equity market also needs to rapidly expand its capacity. That’s where transferability will play a vital role — and big banks, new startups, renewable energy developers and armies of lawyers and consultants are all rushing to put it into practice.” Article link here.

Bank of America Announces Tax Credit Plan to Boost Clean Power – Katherine Doherty – Bloomberg - “After striking a first-of-its-kind deal to buy renewable energy tax credits, Bank of America Corp. is carving out a role as broker for the incentives under a plan that gives firms tax breaks for financing clean-power projects.” Thanks to NY-GEO Director of Operations John Rath for this tip. Article link here.
Analysis of Australian Gas Utility Strategy – Jay Gordon and Kevin Morrison - Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis – Preparation for stranded gas assets - as customers move away from gas when they electrify their heating and hot water systems - is under way in Australia. There, it's the gas industry leading the way with a $461 million request to regulators to cover the costs. “While the gas distribution networks are already making plans to cover their losses resulting from the energy transition, their promotion of ‘renewable gas’ leaves consumers and other network stakeholders exposed to unnecessary risk. For residential customers in particular, the campaigns could serve to encourage them to continue to purchase gas appliances in the belief that there is a long-term future for their domestic gas supply.” NY-GEO and its allies have filed similar comments with the Public Service Commission, most recently in response to the National Fuel Long Term Gas Plan. Gov. Hochul Signs Ban on Radioactive Dumping in the Hudson – Gothamist – “Gov. Kathy Hochul signed the “Save the Hudson” bill into law on Friday (August 18th), banning any further radioactive waste dumping in the Hudson River. The defunct Indian Point Energy Center, which is the only nuclear plant on the Hudson, is undergoing decommissioning. In February, the plant’s owner, Holtec International, announced it would dump batches of more than 1 million gallons of radioactive water into the river beginning this summer – describing it as the best option for disposing of the material. The law effectively blocks this planned discharge." Thanks to the Alliance for a Green Economy for this tip. Article link here.

An Idealogue’s Electrification Nightmare – John Green – See if you can spot the flaws in this nightmare scenario that mocks electrification and is focused on a California bill on bi-directional charging for electric vehicles. Article link here.
1st Q 2023 – Most New Electric Generating Capacity is Solar - Maria McCoy – Institute for Local Self Reliance (ILSR) – “Eight gigawatts of new power generation capacity came online in the first quarter of 2023. For the third quarter in a row, over half of new generation was solar power (4.5 gigawatts). This was the strongest ever first quarter for the solar industry. Wind farm development slowed from the previous quarter, while fossil gas bounced back from its slowest quarter in two years. In the chart below, we illustrate the past two years of new electric power capacity in the U.S., disaggregated by energy source on a quarterly basis.” Article link here.

How Quebec Banned Fracking – Louis Ramirez – The Breach – “Today, Quebec’s ban on hydrocarbon exploration represents a massive social movement victory, but the story of it has never been fully told. The Breach conducted more than a dozen interviews with key leaders to distill its lessons. Developed over two decades, the movement won by building coalitions and using decentralized organizing, deploying tactics ranging from legal advocacy to direct action, sometimes in tension.” Thanks to author Bill McKibben for this tip. Coal Plant Closure Led to Rapid Drop in Heart Attacks and Strokes – Lottie Limb – euronews.com – “Shenango Coke Works facility in Pittsburgh closed in January 2016 after incurring millions of dollars in government fines for air and water pollution. Average weekly visits to the local emergency departments for heart-related problems decreased by 42 per cent immediately after the shutdown, analyses of state health records show… The study did not demonstrate a cause-and-effect link between any one individual’s health and the plant’s closure, exactly. But… from January 2016 through to December 2018…There were 33 fewer average annual hospitalisations for heart disease over this period compared to the three years preceding the plant closure. This included 13 fewer average yearly hospitalisations for ischemic heart disease (typically heart attack) and 12 fewer average yearly hospitalisations for cerebrovascular events (most often stroke).” Article link here.

USDOE: Renewables Could Provide 81% of Electric Power by 2030 and Cut Rates 8-9% - Summary from the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis – “New investments arising from the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and the 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Act will help propel the proportion of electricity generated by carbon-free resources in the US, from 42% in 2022 to between 72% and 81% in 2030, according to the analysis released Aug. 16. With more clean energy on the grid, households would save up to $38 billion on power bills from 2022 to 2030, and businesses' electricity costs would drop” the DOE report said. Thanks to NY-GEO Director of Operations John Rath for this tip. Article link here.
The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022
Inflation Reduction Act’s First Year – Dan McCarthy - Canary Media – “Plans for more than 100 new clean energy manufacturing facilities have been announced in the U.S. since August 16, 2022, the day President Biden signed the law. Renewable energy developers are expected to build projects in the U.S. at a far faster pace than previously forecast. Companies from around the world are plowing billions of dollars into U.S.-based solar, wind, battery and EV ventures… A recent paper in the journal Science analyzes nine different models and determines that the climate law has put the country on track to cut emissions by between 33 and 40 percent below 2005 levels by 2030. That’s not enough to meet its goal to halve emissions by 2030, but it’s much more than the country would have managed without the law, the analysis concludes." Article link here.
Behind the Scenes – How the IRA Came Together - Maria Virginia Olano – Canary Media – “When the Inflation Reduction Act was being debated and voted on in Congress, all eyes were on a handful of key Democratic politicians: Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia, Senator Chuck Schumer of New York and President Joe Biden. But while this cast of powerful political characters deserved attention for their outsize role in the process, hundreds if not thousands of others worked tirelessly behind the scenes to craft and ultimately pass the first-ever major piece of U.S. climate legislation. Canary Media asked seven of these unsung heroes to reflect on their experiences and share some insights into how federal clean energy policy actually takes shape — and what’s still left to accomplish for the U.S. climate movement." Article link here.
Direct Pay: The Billion Dollar Game Changer for Non-Profits– Jeff St. John – Canary Media – “Direct payments (aka Elective Payments) to cities, tribes, nonprofits and other entities that don’t pay taxes could dramatically expand clean energy growth and boost community ownership. ‘tax credits reward wealth with ownership, and everyone else gets left behind,’ (Michelle Moore, CEO of the Washington, D.C.–based nonprofit Groundswell) said. But nestled within the Inflation Reduction Act is a provision that has unleashed hundreds of billions of dollars of clean-energy tax credits to city and county governments, schools and universities, nonprofits, tribal communities and other entities that don’t pay federal taxes. The provision is known as direct pay, and it’s ‘a game-changer,’ according to Moore.” Article link here. | | Happy Birthday, IRA from the Sierra Club – Osha Gay Davidson – Sierra Magazine – “Over the course of a decade, new spending and tax incentives estimated at half a trillion dollars will go toward reducing carbon emissions. This is by design. The long-haul nature of the IRA is key to its potential for success, says Lori Bird, director of the US Energy Program at the World Resources Institute. ‘The fact that the incentives will be available for a 10-year period is a game changer for the clean energy industry,’ she told Sierra… All the experts interviewed agreed that the Inflation Reduction Act alone won’t head off the worst effects of climate change. ‘The IRA isn’t sufficient to get all of the carbon reduction that we need,' Bird concluded, 'but it’s an excellent step in the right direction.’ " Article link here.
IRA Feeds a Factory Frenzy – Dan McCarthy, Maria Virginia Olano – Canary Media - “In just 12 short months, Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act has spurred more than 100 new cleantech manufacturing announcements and nearly $80B in private investment…’What has taken place as a result of and since the Inflation Reduction Act can simply not be overstated,’ said Aaron Brickman, senior principal in the U.S. program of clean energy think tank RMI. ‘The United States is effectively now the most attractive destination for global capital in clean energy and cleantech.’ " Article link here.
Youth Plaintiffs Notch a Victory in Landmark Climate Change Lawsuit – Micah Drew – Sierra – Magazine of the Sierra Club – “A Montana district judge on Monday issued a ruling in the nation’s first constitutional climate change trial declaring that the youth plaintiffs have a ‘fundamental constitutional right to a clean and healthful environment’ while revoking two Montana statutes. The state attorney general’s office said it would appeal the ruling.” Article link here.
How Four Groups of Animals Have Evolved to Meet Climate Challenges - Sophia Quaglia – Sierra Magazine - “Climate change is one of the top five drivers of extinction, but it’s not always a zero-sum game. In general, scientists expect species will have to move upward in elevation or latitude to cope in a warming world. However, in California, many animals have been adapting to their mutating environments in ingenious ways. They’re prioritizing environmental preferences other than temperature, they’re switching their diets, they’re altering their genetic makeup, and they’re changing their reproductive behaviors.” Article link here.

An Ever-Smaller Board on Which to Play the Human Game – Bill McKibben – The Crucial Years – “Yellowknife (the capital of Canada’s Northwest Territories) is being evacuated—its 20,000 residents trying to drive south down the long road towards Edmonton, or being flown out in shifts from its small airport, even as flames and smoke lick at the city limits. It’s important—in this year that has seen global warming come fully to life—to describe accurately what’s happening on our planet. And one key thing is: the number of places humans can safely live is now shrinking. Fast. The size of the board on which we can play the great game of human civilization is getting smaller."
