A Clean Energy Future Depends on NY HEAT - Peter Aronson – NY League of Conservation Voters – “It’s time to bring the clean energy transition to our heating and cooling systems and create an affordable, equitable, zero-emissions clean energy future that benefits all New Yorkers by passing the NY HEAT Act next year. The bill, the Home Energy Affordable Transition Act (SB 2016), will push gas utilities carefully in a new direction, enabling them to comply with New York’s Climate Act while helping customers switch to affordable and reliable zero-emissions heating and cooling.” Article link here

Seeking Design Engineering for Networked Geothermal Expansion in Framingham, MA – HEET (Home Energy Efficiency Team) - In April 2023, a community coalition led by HEET and including the City of Framingham and Eversource Gas was awarded a Community Geothermal grant by the DOE’s Geothermal Technologies Office. This funding will be used to design an expansion of the networked geothermal system Eversource is installing in Framingham, MA. Eversource will soon be releasing a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the design of this expansion project. Article link here. 

Risk of ‘Death Spiral’ for Canadian Gas Utility Enbridge – John Woodside – National Observer – “Fossil fuel giant Enbridge faces the risk of a 'death spiral' as the energy transition to renewables unfolds, according to evidence the company filed with the Ontario regulator. A death spiral could occur when customers, fed up with the increasing costs of gas, switch to cleaner and cheaper sources of energy. The evidence discussing the possibility of a death spiral is part of Enbridge’s 7,000-plus page application now in front of the Ontario Energy Board." Thanks to NY-GEO member Dave Hatherton for this tip.  Article link here.

A Playlist of Heat Pump Ads – Climate writer Dave Margulis has compiled numerous international heat pump ads “All these videos have millions, or hundreds of thousands, of views on YouTube… What if the U.S. had great marketing for heat pumps? They do in other countries… take a look at these awesome heat pump TV ads I found on YouTube. Apparently Thailand, Pakistan, India, Greece, Spain, Italy, and New Zealand are all places where heat pumps are popular enough to warrant big-budget TV brand ad campaigns.“ He notes one based in India with 512 million views on youtube. Thanks to author Bill McKibben for this tip. Playlist link here.

You Should Consider a Heat Pump Dryer – Amanda Blum – Lifehacker – “Heat pump dryers are coming to the U.S. and they’re going to change the way we use dryers. Upsides: No more venting! You can put ‘em anywhere, and they’re much better for the environment; they’ve been in Europe for years. NY’s First State-Owned Utility Scale Energy Storage Facility Is On-Line – Renewable Energy World – The 20 MW project, located near Plattsburgh, is the NYPA’s first utility-scale battery (lithium ion) project and the first such facility built by New York State. The facility consists of five 53-foot walk-in enclosures, each with more than 19,500 batteries grouped in modules and stacked in racks. Article link here.

DeSantis Tells Biden: Keep Your IRA Money - Jennifer Haberkorn – POLITICO – “The Inflation Reduction Act makes Florida eligible for some $350 million in energy efficiency incentives. But Gov. Renewables Keep Getting Cheaper – Alison Takemura - Canary Media – Renewable energy already beats fossil fuels on cost globally. Further, by 2030, technology improvements and learning curves could slash today’s prices by a quarter for wind and by half for solar, according to a recent report from clean energy think tank RMI. Fossil fuels aren’t getting cheaper at least in part because they are not technologies (thus lack an empirical learning curve), but rather are commodities dug up from the ground. For more than a century, fossil fuel prices have swung wildly without trending consistently downward. Article link here.

Texas Has Its First Virtual Power Plants – Julian Spector - Canary Media – Two clusters of Tesla Powerwall customers, in Houston and Dallas, have been cleared to inject power from their battery storage devices onto the Texas grid and earn compensation for their services. State utility regulators are allowing an initial tranche of 80 megawatts of aggregated, small-scale capacity to bid into the markets. Currently, eight aggregations are working their way to a total of 7.2 megawatts. Article link here.

China Reaches Peak Gasoline in Milestone for Electric Vehicles – Colin McKerracher – Bloomberg Newsletter – “Earlier this month, Chinese oil giant Sinopec made a surprise announcement that mostly flew under the radar. It’s now expecting gasoline demand in China to peak this year, two years earlier than its previous outlooks. The main culprit? The surging number of electric vehicles on the road.” Article link here.

IRA Wage and Apprentice Requirements Posted - By Keith Martin in Washington, DC, David Burton in New York, Hilary Lefko in Washington, DC, and Gabrielle Jacques in New York – Norton Rose Fulbright – “These requirements grew out of a promise by President Biden during the last campaign that green jobs would be well-paying jobs and that the government would help workers who want to learn new trades tied to the green economy. Projects on which construction started by January 28, 2023 and small facilities with nameplate capacities under 1 MW are exempted from the wage and apprentice requirements. Failure to comply means a project cannot qualify for tax credits at the full rates. The owner would be left with tax credits at only a fifth of the full rate: for example, a 6% rather than 30% investment tax credit.” Editor’s note: Calculation methodologies have been submitted to the US Treasury by the GeoExchange Organization on how to determine the 1 MW threshold for geothermal heat pump projects. Just In! will include any updates from Treasury as they become available. Article link here.

Richest Households Are Responsible for 40 Percent of US Climate Emissions - Zach Burdyk - The Hill - A new peer-reviewed study sheds new light on the role wealth plays in driving climate change.  The study, led by the University of Massachusetts, revealed that the wealthiest tenth of U.S. households were responsible for 40 percent of the nation’s total greenhouse gas emissions between 1990 and 2019.  It also found that the wealth-emissions gap has only grown, with emissions for the bottom 90 percent of households falling during that time period while those of the top 10 percent increased.  Article link here.

Poll: Do Heat Pumps reduce Climate Impact? – From NY-GEO member Bob Wyman – “A Washington Post/ University of Maryland national poll shows that 40% of respondents thought ‘Using a heat pump...’ would reduce someone's climate impact. Even though that is obvious to you and me, I think that 40% is a massively higher recognition of heat pumps than what we had just a very few years ago. So, that's the ‘good news.’ Of course, the bad news is that 58% of those polled don't think installing a heat pump will have much impact. Clearly, although we've come a long way, there is still much to be done.” Article link here.

2023 10 27 – IGSHPA Dig Deeper - GHP Impact Analysis – 11:30 am ET – Speaker: Jeff Winick & Sean Porse of U.S. Department of Energy Geothermal Technologies Office, “In Fiscal Year 2022, with GTO support, ORNL and NREL conducted a modeling assessment of the grid impacts resulting from the mass deployment of GHPs. Modeled changes in end use load profiles for the US building stock and their impacts on the bulk power system were analyzed under various carbon policy, electrification, and sensitivity scenarios using capacity expansion modeling (ReEDS) and production cost modeling (PLEXOS). The results demonstrate GHPs’ significant aggregate value to a decarbonizing grid through reduced infrastructure requirements, reduced emissions, and improved grid efficiency.” Register here. 2024 05 28 to 30 – IGSHPA Research Conference - The International Ground Source Heat Pump Association (IGSHPA) is pleased to announce that the next IGSHPA Research Conference will be held at Polytechnique Montréal. This is the fourth in a series of research conferences held in Denver (2017), Stockholm (2018), and Las Vegas (2022). Like the previous three conferences, papers will undergo peer-review to ensure quality. Details will follow, but it is anticipated that abstracts will be due on September 18, 2023 and papers due around November 20, 2023. Conference website - https://igshpa.org/igshpa-research-conference/
