NY-GEO Files Comments on National Fuel’s Long Range Plan – National Fuel Gas (NFG) has filed a 20-year plan in a proceeding designed to bring gas utilities in compliance with New York’s legal mandate to reduce greenhouse gases by 40% by 2030 and 85% by 2050. NY-GEO has filed its own comments in opposition to the plan and has also signed on to a comment document filed by the Alliance for a Green Economy with over 100 co-signers. NY-GEO’s comments note “National Fuel’s plan can be projected to cause ratepayers to pay 1.7 times as much in capital expense between now and 2050 than a high electrification scenario.” Filed comments are here. National Fuel’s Plan is item 35 (filed 2023 07 17). NY-GEO’s comments are Item 48 and AGREE’s comments are item 44.
Clean Heat Program Changes – The NYS Clean Heat program will hold a stakeholder session on September 14th at 9:00 am ET where the joint utilities will present on several changes to the program that took effect September 1st, after having been announced in June. Among the changes: “Clean Heat incentives on all projects for all utilities are capped at 50% of project costs, with the exception of GSHP projects in the Con Edison service territory. Incentives for Con Edison Residential GSHP projects that are located within a Disadvantaged Community (DAC) will be limited to 70% of project costs.” Some of the other changes are shown in the chart below. September PSC Meeting Agenda Expected to Include UTENJA Pilot Guidance - The Department of Public Service has released the preliminary agenda for the September 14th meeting of the PSC – which includes under Items To Be Resolved Through Discussion the Case 201 22-M-0429 Proceeding on Motion of the Commission to Implement the Requirements of the Utility Thermal Energy Network and Jobs Act (UTENJA). The 7 major NYS utilities are seeking guidance on how to conduct their proposed networked geothermal pilot projects. The utilities have collectively filed 15 separate locations statewide in October of 2022 and refinements in January of 2023. Full agenda for download here.

NYSERDA Electrification Training Series - The NYSERDA Building Electrification Training Series has been developed in conjunction with SWA (Steven Winter Associates). The free series features seven courses on topics related to the electrification of buildings in residential and commercial settings. Hochul: $12 Million to Boost Climate Solutions Manufacturing in NY – “Governor Hochul announced the selection of ADL Ventures and Second Muse to advance climate tech innovation and manufacturing in New York State. The companies will develop and administer programs – the ClimateTech Growth Platform and Manufacturing Corps (M-Corps) respectively – that connect entrepreneurs and startups with resources, supply chain partners, and manufacturers in communities statewide, prioritizing connections in underserved areas. NYSERDA is providing more than $12 million to the two awardees to provide business resources to early-stage companies under the ClimateTech Growth Platform and scale climate technologies through the M-Corps program.” Press release here.

Roadtrip to Explore Jobs Fueling the Clean Energy Transition - NYSERDA - “New York’s clean energy investments and ambitious climate goals are creating thousands of new jobs in fields like offshore wind, green buildings, and alternative transportation. A new documentary series, Empowered State, dives into the diverse and rewarding career opportunities within New York’s growing clean energy economy at this pivotal moment in addressing the climate crisis. The four-part docuseries, which was created by Roadtrip Nation, follows three young adults – Leila Tevlin, David Yang, and Julia Dworetzky – on their 975-mile, three-week journey across New York to explore the many facets of the clean energy transition in their home state and meet the people making it happen.” Documentary link here.

New Pilot Project Aims to Increase NY Grid Capacity for Clean Energy – Renewable Energy World – “Avangrid… has announced a pilot project with LineVision to free up additional capacity on its transmission lines for renewable energy in New York state. The project will deploy advanced monitoring for overhead transmission lines in the Hornell, N.Y. area with the goal of reducing grid congestion by providing real-time data on where additional power can safely flow through the existing transmission infrastructure. This data and visibility could aid in linking more renewable energy resources into New York’s electrical grid and supporting the state’s clean energy goals, the companies said.” Article link here.

Move Faster to Embrace Electrification as Climate Change Advances -3-minute read - Jamal Lewis, Rewiring America - Special to the USA TODAY Network – “The Garden State is on track to unlock millions in energy savings for households and solidify its role as a trailblazer in the fight against climate change. That’s because Gov. Phil Murphy and the Board of Public Utilities approved a framework and allocated $300 million for a Building Decarbonization Program. Enbridge Buys Dominion Gas Utilities - Arunima Kumar and David French – Reuters – “Enbridge (ENB.TO) will buy three utilities from Dominion Energy (D.N) for $14 billion including debt, the Canadian pipeline operator said on Tuesday, creating North America's largest natural gas provider and doubling its gas distribution business. The deal is seen as a bet on the future of natural gas in a regulated market even as energy companies and consumers are transitioning to a greener future by phasing out fossil fuels…Ratings agency Moody's swiftly downgraded the outlook for Enbridge and four subsidiaries to negative from stable, saying the deal would add pressure to an ‘already weak financial profile that we expect to persist following the transaction close.’" Tip from Allison MacMunn at the National Building Electrification Network and Sunstone Strategies. Manufacturer Sets Up Electrification Training Program – Frank Jossi - Energy News Network – “Thermo King, headquartered in the Minneapolis suburb of Bloomington, has for decades manufactured diesel-powered refrigeration and heating units for use in semi-trailers, trains, ships and buses. The company’s logo can be seen on ubiquitous ‘reefer’ trailers being pulled along highways across the country. As Thermo King has begun a massive transition to electrify its product lines, training employees has been a challenge — and a common one facing other companies moving toward electrification.” Article link here.

Are You Using the Right Rebate and Tax Credit Language on Your Website? - Emily Silverman – Energy Circle – “The Inflation Reduction Act spiked consumer interest in energy efficiency home improvements and renewable energy projects, giving contractors an opportunity to capitalize on the increased attention. To take full advantage, your website needs to use the same terminology homeowners use when they search for incentives online so they can find you and book your services. So how do you do that? New York City Preps for Hurricane Lee – “New York City officials are preparing for the potential arrival of Hurricane Lee, a storm passing through the Atlantic Ocean that could hit the East Coast sometime next week. The hurricane, which by yesterday had intensified into an unusual Category 5 storm, weakened by Friday morning to Category 4 as it moved north of the Caribbean with 155 mile-per-hour winds. Additionally, an impressive 60% of electric water heaters sold in Maine are heat pump water heaters (HPWHs). Modeled changes in end use load profiles for the US building stock and their impacts on the bulk power system were analyzed under various carbon policy, electrification, and sensitivity scenarios using capacity expansion modeling (ReEDS) and production cost modeling (PLEXOS). 2024 05 28 to 30 – IGSHPA Research Conference - The International Ground Source Heat Pump Association (IGSHPA) is pleased to announce that the next IGSHPA Research Conference will be held at Polytechnique Montréal. This is the fourth in a series of research conferences held in Denver (2017), Stockholm (2018), and Las Vegas (2022). Like the previous three conferences, papers will undergo peer-review to ensure quality. Details will follow, but it is anticipated that abstracts will be due on September 18, 2023 and papers due around November 20, 2023. “Dandelion Energy is growing its Drilling Department and we are looking for Senior/Master Drillers to operate our new rigs and lead our on-site drilling efforts for residential geothermal projects.In this role, you will make a significant impact in redefining how residential ground heat exchangers are installed which will lay the groundwork for Dandelion’s future growth and success. The Senior Driller will be directly responsible for the production rate of geothermal boreholes, the operation, and maintenance of equipment, the safety of on-site workers, and delivering feedback to both the Operations and Engineering team on how to optimize the overall process.
