We are excited to share there will be two conference events in 2024 with content focused on both the diverse residential and commercial markets in NYS. We look forward to sharing registration, sponsorship, and exhibiting information SOON. Albany, April 8-9 will open with an exhibitor happy hour on the 8th and a full day of session tracks on the 9^th with a focus on Upstate topics.  Brooklyn, October 21-23 includes two full days of sessions (4 tracks), the popular NY-GEO Annual Dinner and planning for a day of local project site tours. It’s NY-GEO’s first conference Downstate and will emphasize content on how to address densely populated areas and large commercial buildings to be sure!  NY-GEO Members can attend the conferences at a discounted rate, so now is a good time to renew your membership through 2024.



Senator Liz Krueger on the NY HEAT Act and the Transition from Fossil Fuels - Spectrum News – “Many of New York’s energy laws were written decades ago when fossil fuels were the only game in town. Now that the state is moving away from fossil fuels and toward renewable energy, some of those old rules and regulations need to be updated, or even repealed. One example is the 100-foot rule, which requires utilities to supply gas to any customer who wants it and demands that ratepayers foot the bill to hook them up”. Hear Senator Krueger define “stranded assets” at the 7:00 minute mark. - Link to 9 minute video here.

Mayor Adams Proposes Changes in Local Law 97 Implementation – Rosemary Misdary – Gothamist - "New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced a new plan, Getting 97 Done, on Tuesday to mobilize building owners who need to comply with Local Law 97 — a measure intended to reduce carbon emissions from buildings that will take effect early next year. But environmental experts say the new plan will weaken the law’s enforcement powers by giving qualified building owners an extra three years to meet carbon reduction deadlines." Article link here.

PSC Moves Development of Utility Thermal Energy Networks Forward – “The 14 pilot proposals submitted to date, totaling up to $435 million, with at least one pilot located in a disadvantaged community in each utility operating territory… included insufficient detail to enable the Commission to fully approve them at this time. Today’s Commission decision provides guidance for the further development of the utilities’ proposals and establishes a staged approach that will provide structure, transparency, and clarity regarding what requirements must be met to advance pilot projects."  PSC press release here.

40% Cut in Hydrofluorocarbon Refrigerants - Cooling Post – “The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued a final rule of a 40% cut in the production and consumption of HFC refrigerants from 2024. The rule aligns with the American Innovation and Manufacturing (AIM) Act, enacted in 2021, which aims to reduce the production and consumption of HFCs by 85% by 2036. The US phase down began on January 1, 2022, with a reduction of HFC production and imports to 10% below baseline levels. Since then, allowances are needed to import and produce HFCs.” Article link here.

France’s Presidential Palace to Go Geo, Aim is to Cut Energy Bills and Tackle Climate Change – “Works are underway to install geothermal energy in Paris's Elysée Palace, bringing the huge 18th century building into line with President Emmanuel Macron's goals on renewables…A study by the non-profit WE Demain in 2021 found the building leaked heat from its many doors and windows during the winter, while over-heating quickly during the summer led to heavy reliance on air-conditioning. WE Demain gave the Elysée an embarrassing “E” rating, which the palace did not publicly contest… A team has begun drilling a borehole at the bottom of the garden some 65 metres deep, or about the height of Notre Dame Cathedral…The renewable energy would compensate for a large part of the Elysée’s heating…The government in February announced a plan to boost geothermal energy, increasing aid for the installation of heat pumps to €5,000 per household.” Article link here.

NYSERDA on Thermal Energy Networks – “Thermal energy networks are another way for municipalities to bring affordable, sustainable, energy efficiency options to their communities. If you’re building out a clean energy infrastructure, or participating in NYSERDA’s Clean Energy Communities program, a thermal energy network project may be a natural next step…While there are three types of heat pumps — air source, ground source, and water source — ground source heat pumps (also known as geothermal) can serve the needs of a single building or be installed in a networked system. Not sure how ground source heat pumps work? This two-minute NYSERDA video explains how they take advantage of the earth’s constant temperature (in New York State, that’s around 50°F) to efficiently heat and cool buildings.” Article link, including video link, here.

ACEEE on Electricity Rates to Advance Electrification – Sagarika Subramanian and Mark Kresowik – ACEEE – American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy – “A new ACEEE white paper explores emerging options to design electric rates to accommodate the transition off fossil fuels and limit utility bills based on income with percentage of income payment plans (PIPPs).  PIPPs cap monthly utility payments for income-eligible households at an affordable percentage of a household’s income, which is often defined as 6%.  PIPPs keep bills affordable despite any increases in utility rates and are complementary to rate designs that encourage electrification. A handful of states implemented PIPPs or similar programs, starting in the 1980s: Ohio, Colorado, Illinois, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, California, New Jersey, and Maine.” Article link here.

New State-Level Building Electrification Fact Sheets – RMI – “Over just a handful of years, electrification has emerged as a cornerstone of effective building decarbonization policy.  Momentum has been driven by increasingly favorable economics (especially for new construction), improved carbon savings from grid and technological advancements, and the growing climate emergency… But we need to move faster, which demands a shared understanding of the essential facts.  To that end, RMI has created a series of state-specific fact sheets designed to inform policymakers, advocates, and other stakeholders on the core issues”.  Thanks to Rachel Golden of the National Building Electrification Network for this tip.  Article link and link to NY, MA and PA fact sheets here.

It’s Deep Geo - Not Heat Pumps - But Google and Project InnerSpace Are Partnering to Advance Geothermal Development – “The collaboration unites the subsurface expertise and resources of Project InnerSpace, a non-profit organization focused on removing barriers to the growth and development of geothermal energy globally, and the data and software capabilities of Google, a global technology leader working to run its operations on 24/7 carbon-free energy and contribute to the decarbonization of global energy systems. Project InnerSpace and Google intend to leverage their respective strengths to address critical challenges facing geothermal development, including the development of a global geothermal resource mapping and assessment tool.” Article link here.

An Analysis of How the Build Public Renewables Act Became Law – Liza Featherstone - In These Times – “Sarahana Shrestha, in her Hudson Valley campaign for state Assembly, made climate and BPRA her main platform planks, defying conventional wisdom that climate was not a kitchen table issue, especially outside of the city. Plus, her opponent was already known in Albany as a climate advocate— not the sort of politician that conventional environmentalists would oppose. But Shrestha won the primary, and her victory became understood as a mandate for BPRA and a warning to politicians who didn’t get on board. Shrestha became the bill’s biggest champion in state government.” Thanks to Francesca Rheannon and author Bill Mckibben for this tip. Article link here.

Smart Thermostats Helping Arizona Cope with Heat Wave – Jeff St. John – Canary Media – In July and August, customers of Arizona’s three biggest utilities reduced their electricity use during afternoon and evening peak demand hours through the use of smart-thermostat-based programs. The utilities offer incentives and free or discounted smart thermostats for customers who agree to let the utility remotely turn up their temperature settings when the grid needs relief from air-conditioning power use, but also provide temporary opt-out options. The AZ utility program has proven to be simpler and more effective than demand response programs in CA and TX. Article link here.

Could Tax-Credit Rules Derail Clean Hydrogen? – Jeff St. John – Canary Media - The U.S. Treasury Department (TD) is formulating rules to govern the IRA’s hydrogen incentives. The “renewable natural gas” industry is pushing the TD to allow clean hydrogen tax credits to go to producers making hydrogen in the conventional, dirty way, by using off-sets such as methane capture from factory farm manure lagoons. This approach would undercut the production of actual green hydrogen. The TD is expected to issue guidance on hydrogen tax credits sometime in October. Article link here 

Record Breaking Number of Solar Installations In 2023 – Eric Wesoff, Maria Virginia Olano – Canary Media – Research firm Bloomberg NEF expects global solar installations to rise by 56% in 2023. China leads the way with 50% of new solar PV projects, and is expected to cross the 500 GW mark by the end of 2023. The U.S. solar industry is expected to add a record 32 GWs of new capacity this year, a 52% increase from 2022. U.S. installed solar capacity is expected to rise from about 160 GWs to about 209 GWs in 2026, around 11% of the global total. Climate-Fueled Weather Disasters & Increases In Agricultural Insurance – Georgina Gustin – Inside Climate News - The cost of the U.S. Federal Crop Insurance Program has soared from just under $3 billion in 2002 to just over $19 billion last year, at least partly due to weather-related losses. Critics say the program encourages the growth of large farms that use more fuel and carbon intensive methods. A new analysis suggests climate change could stoke the cost of the program to unsustainable levels.  Article link here.

Modeled changes in end use load profiles for the US building stock and their impacts on the bulk power system were analyzed under various carbon policy, electrification, and sensitivity scenarios using capacity expansion modeling (ReEDS) and production cost modeling (PLEXOS). The results demonstrate GHPs’ significant aggregate value to a decarbonizing grid through reduced infrastructure requirements, reduced emissions, and improved grid efficiency.” Register here. 2023 12 05 to 07 - IGSHPA Annual Conference – The International Ground Source Heat Pump Association (IGSHPA) will be holding its annual conference at the Las Vegas Convention Center. IGSHPA is partnering again this year with NGWA (National Ground Water Association). Keynote speaker will be Alejandro Moreno, the Acting Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy at the Department of Energy. 2024 05 28 to 30 – IGSHPA Research Conference - The International Ground Source Heat Pump Association (IGSHPA) is pleased to announce that the next IGSHPA Research Conference will be held at Polytechnique Montréal. This is the fourth in a series of research conferences held in Denver (2017), Stockholm (2018), and Las Vegas (2022). Like the previous three conferences, papers will undergo peer-review to ensure quality. Details will follow, but it is anticipated that abstracts will be due on September 18, 2023 and papers due around November 20, 2023. Conference website - https://igshpa.org/igshpa-research-conference/

“Dandelion Energy is growing its Drilling Department and we are looking for Senior/Master Drillers to operate our new rigs and lead our on-site drilling efforts for residential geothermal projects.In this role, you will make a significant impact in redefining how residential ground heat exchangers are installed which will lay the groundwork for Dandelion’s future growth and success.
