Discovering Hidden Talent

Special Edition!

Hello!

It took four years but my latest book has launched today. I wrote Hidden Talent: How to Employ Refugees, the Formerly Incarcerated & People With Disabilities in my quest to find businesses that have cracked the code of hiring marginalized workers. I wanted busy managers to learn from these stories. Now they can.

dave delong with hidden talent book

Loaded with practical steps and best practices, Hidden Talent shows how to:

  • Identify specific opportunities for employing foreign-born workers, the formerly incarcerated or people with disabilities.

  • Use 5 interviewing tips from a former inmate turned business owner.

  • Onboard non-English speaking employees more effectively.

  • Successfully employ different levels of talent on the autism spectrum.

  • Train supervisors to engage more effectively with marginalized workers.

  • Build productive partnerships to create new talent pipelines.

One of the overlooked challenges of writing a book is you must be willing to promote and market it to get your message out. Asking for your support isn’t easy for me. But I sincerely believe Hidden Talent has ideas that can change business performance and change lives. Will you help me do that?

Researching and writing this book has been a labor of love. Hidden Talent can help provide businesses with access to a broader talent pool, improve financial performance by reducing turnover, and build a more inclusive, engaging culture. In the meantime, you can do three things to help spread the messages in my book:

How to Jump-Start Your “Why” for Second-Chance Hiring

man behind prison fence

Here’s an example of resources scattered throughout my book Hidden Talent to motivate busy managers to consider hiring marginalized workers. Want to increase your motivation to tackle the challenges of second-chance hiring? These resources might supply inspiration:

  • I Have a Bean is a video about the experiences of second-chance hires at this tiny coffee roaster.

  • Outside In (2017) is a movie about a man who struggles to readjust to life after prison in his small town and forms an intense bond with his former high school teacher.

  • The Second-Chance Club: Hardship and Hope After Prison by Jason Hardy (2020) offers an inside look at the painfully inadequate resources available to a New Orleans parole officer trying to help those recently released from prison.

  • Untapped Talent: How Second-Chance Hiring Works for Your Business and the Community by Jeffrey Korzenik (2021) is a terrific book that should be read by any leader looking to invest in a second-chance hiring program.

  • Dave’s Killer Bread Story is a short YouTube video about Dave Dahl’s journey from prison to being a hugely successful entrepreneur who is committed to opening doors for ex-felons.

  • The Many Lives of Mama Love: A Memoir of Lying, Stealing, Writing, and Healing by Lara Love Hardin (2023) portrays one woman’s odyssey from suburban mother to drug addict to inmate, as well as her struggles to overcome shame and the obstacles to building a career in the wake of prison.

  • UTEC: Trading Violence and Poverty for Social and Economic Success. This short video shows the challenges justice-involved young adults face when they try to break out of the system of poverty and gangs that traps so many.

Trump’s Immigration Policies and the Shrinking Labor Pool

legal immigrants not welcome

The Trump administration’s decisions to curtail immigration programs and to deport certain asylum seekers and refugees is creating major uncertainties about the supply of foreign-born workers in the US labor pool.

But the fact remains, immigration is the only way our workforce will grow in the next 20 years due to immutable demographic trends (e.g., much lower fertility rate, aging Boomers). No matter what, employers must get better at recruiting, onboarding and employing foreign-born workers if their businesses are to continue to thrive.

My new book Hidden Talent shows that a growing number of companies have learned to tap this critical labor pool. For example, do these staffing problems sound familiar?

  • A major Boston hospital struggles to hire and retain enough technicians to support critical research operations.

  • A mid-size Ohio manufacturer can’t find enough workers to staff its second shift. The shortage of workers has increased overtime costs and caused scheduling problems for customers used to fast turnaround.

Both of these staffing challenges were solved by hiring refugees or immigrants. Lessons about how to recruit, train and employ foreign-born employees is a central theme in my book: Hidden Talent: How to Employ Refugees, the Formerly Incarcerated & People With Disabilities.
