Minister's Moment

Mindfulness is about being fully in the moment with little or no attachment to what has been or what will be. Barriers to the practice of mindfulness include evaluating and judging based on our past as well as wishing and hoping based on our future. Both of which leave us little room for the current moment. Furthermore, the aging process creates its own challenges with respect to present moment awareness. For elders, the period behind them is ever greater than the period in front of them. Consequently, they focus more on the past then on future possibilities. Conversely, the young put their attention on their future dreams and desires. Either way, moment by moment, we all are choosing where we put our attention. We can put on the past and future or focus it in the present where life is happening right now.

Being mindful is not about detachment or complacency without regard to our circumstances. Furthermore, it doesn’t mean that we ignore our commitments or responsibilities to our self or others. That is self-centeredness not mindfulness. Mindfulness is showing up in every moment. It calls on us to be authentic, committed, and equally responsive to the wellbeing of our self and others. It also means that we value others’ opinions as much as our own. In addition, we value their safety and freedom to choose for themselves. Therefore, we don’t take advantage of them or pressure them to do what we think they should do. Mindfulness also includes knowing how we are feeling and caring how others are feeling as well. It also fosters acceptance of others as they are rather than a need to fix them. Ultimately it put us in a state of mind where we can see them as divine instruments of God. For as Jesus said, “It is not I, but the Father within who does the work”.

Our special musical guest is Kari Joys. She will be accompanied by LeeAnn Aerlyn Moore, Gary Buettner and Dagan Williamson.
