Collected Burghound Reviews
Burghound : "Outstanding Top Value"
“(from vineyards in Santenay, Marsannay and the lower portions of Volnay). A fresh, ripe and relatively elegant nose consists of various red berry aromas cut with hints of plum and earth. There is both good volume and energy to the caressing and utterly delicious middle weight flavors that display an interesting contrast as the finish has a bittersweet character. This is quite good for its level and should be capable of rewarding a few years of aging as well. Drink 2022+.”- Allen Meadows, Burghound
Burghound : "Outstanding Top Value"
“from Le Village). A more deeply pitched nose combines notes of violet with those of cassis and plum. The sleek, intense and beautifully vibrant medium weight flavors possess fine delineation and a subtle minerality that adds a sense of lift to the balanced, long, linear and youthfully austere finale. This too is very good for its level. Drink 2024+.”- Allen Meadows, Burghound
Burghound Score: 93
"Sweet Spot Outstanding"
"(from a .60 ha parcel). An equally ripe nose speaks of cassis, black raspberry, spiced tea and similar floral whiffs. The mouthfeel of the middle weight flavors is classy and sophisticated thanks to the super-fine-grained tannins shaping the lacy, lilting and strikingly long finish. This is excellent and very much worth your interest. Drink 2030+.”- Allen Meadows, Burghound

"Outstanding"
"(from 25+ year old vines). An even prettier and more complex nose shyly offer up its notes of essence of black raspberry, cherry and spiced plum. The succulent yet racy flavors possess a seductive texture and relatively sophisticated mouthfeel thanks to the fine-grained tannins shaping the balanced and linear finish that also reflects a touch of youthful austerity. Lovely. Drink 2026+.”- Allen Meadows, Burghound

"Outstanding"
"A restrained if clearly ripe nose is comprised by notes of cassis, black cherry, violet and pretty rose petal hints. The sleeker and more refined is perhaps not quite as concentrated flavors also possess a seductive texture and even more minerality, all wrapped in a mildly warm and youthfully austere finale that is slightly firmer. This too is lovely. Drink 2028+.”- Allen Meadows, Burghound
Burghound Score: 90
"from a parcel purchased in 2007 and replanted; 2018 will be the first vintage where this has been declared under its own name as it was previously blended). This is riper still and there is a touch of prune character to the plummy dark berry fruit scents. The bigger but notably less refined flavors possess a caressing mid-palate that contrasts markedly with the robust and muscular finish that offers very good depth and persistence. While the tannins are firm there is sufficient dry extract to suggest that this could be approached after only 5-ish years. Drink 2030+.”- Allen Meadows, Burghound

"Sweet Spot Outstanding"
"(from equally sized parcels in both Rugiens Hauts and Bas that measure ~1 ha). A super- fresh if restrained nose speaks of ripe aromas of poached plum, violet and black cherry. The highly energetic and intensely mineral-driven middle weight plus flavors are at once tautly muscular and precise while the youthfully austere finish is shaped by quite fine-grained tannins. Like all examples of Rugiens worth of their name, this is built-to-age and will need it. Drink 2033+.”- Allen Meadows, Burghound
Burghound Score: 94
"A discreetly floral-suffused nose gracefully displays ripe yet cool aromas of dark berry fruit liqueur, spice and a suggestion of the  sauvage . There is very good density to the suave and energetic middle weight plus flavors that brim with minerality on the linear, focused and lingering finish. This needs to develop more depth but given the firm supporting tannic spine, it should be able to do that without undue concern. Drink 2033+.”- Allen Meadows, Burghound
Burghound Score: 93
"(from En Orveaux). A softly spicy nose speaks of purple fruit, floral and an appealing whiff of Asian style tea. There is a bit more mid-palate density to the medium-bodied flavors that combine good power with evident muscle on the firm, dusty, serious and youthfully austere finish. This will require at least some forbearance as it’s clearly constructed for the longer-term. Drink 2033+.”- Allen Meadows, Burghound
Burghound Score: 92
"(near the very top of the vineyard and atypically, the rows are planted North-South). Like the Clos de Vougeot, there is a very subtle trace of volatile acidity on the very spicy and distinctly ripe aromas of plum liqueur, cassis and warm earth scents. There is a high level of ripeness on the palate as well to the mocha-infused big-bodied flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the very firm if noticeably warm finale. I suspect that this will eventually come together though it’s presently somewhat disjointed. Drink 2033+.”- Allen Meadows, Burghound
Burghound Score: 94
"This is aromatically similar to the Latricières but as one would reasonably expect, it’s markedly spicier. There is better density and power to the broad-shouldered flavors that aren’t quite as mineral-driven but are blessed with even more dry extract on the hugely long if slightly warm finale. Patience again recommended. Drink 2033+.”- Allen Meadows, Burghound
Burghound Score: 95
"(from Chambolle fruit). Here the reserved nose is ripe yet cool with its layered combination of both red and dark berry fruit aromas that are also quite spicy. There is a bit less density to the middle weight flavors that compensate by being sleeker and more well-delineated on the beautifully textured, dusty, powerful and very serious finale. This is unapologetically built-to-age and a wine that’s going to need at least a decade first. Drink 2035+.”- Allen Meadows, Burghound
Burghound Score: 92
"(from a ~.34 ha parcel in Grand Maupertuis). This plays right on the edge of volatile acidity with its nose of poached plum, black raspberry and warm earth. The middle weight flavors are not especially dense but do possess a highly attractive mouthfeel while displaying good power on the bitter cherry pit-inflected finish. This moderately firm effort is somewhat awkward at present, but I suspect that it will recover with age. Drink 2033+.”- Allen Meadows, Burghound
