Greetings!
Although 2022 has been a challenging year for many of us, December is always a good time to celebrate where we ARE in this moment- we hope you will join us!

For HealthAdvocateX, we have continued to do great work:

As we look back, we are proud to be continuing to build the health advocacy world we want to be part of – for the benefit of people who want to put health advocacy at the center of all health and health care decisions.

If you are wondering how you can help, please consider volunteering, donating or participating in our events. We can’t do it without you!

Here is wishing you all the best for a joyful and meaningful holiday season and here is to your good health.

Your Friends at HealthAdvocateX

Professional Networking - December 2022
When: December 8, 2022 | 4:00 – 5:30 PM (PT)
Where: Online via Zoom (Register Here)
Cost: $15 for Members | $20 for Non-Members
Give and Get: Bring hard problem to solve, a challenge or barrier, and receive insightful questions and suggestions from peers.

December’s Networking event offers another two-fold opportunity: practicing succinct delivery of a practice challenge and the chance to obtain suggestions toward solution from your peers.

The Give: Be ready to share a problem or challenge you solved, or for which you’d welcome input. This will be a two-minute share (we get to practice our succinct presentation).

The Get: Attendees will better know each other, and network through sharing of experience as well as questions and solutions offered.

This program will be facilitated by Nancy Ruffner.

Each networking session has a specific focus. If there are topics/ideas/speakers you would like to suggest, please email us at [email protected]

Honoring Our Outstanding HealthAdvocateX Board!
As you know, we have been very grateful to our outstanding Board, many of whom have been volunteering since our founding 10 years ago! We will be honoring three Board Members who will be retiring off the Board this month. Please join us in thanking: Greg Berkman, Gina Culbert and Jessica Kolstad Kim.

Greg Berkman has been our long-time treasurer, strategic counselor and co-founder. We have appreciated Greg’s humor (always needed!), SWOT skills and attention to SMART goals, in addition to helping the organization stay on top of our financials.

Gina Culbert has served in a variety of roles, taking on leadership in the areas of our original filing as a 501(c)(3) organization, trademark, liaisoning for outside legal review as well as serving as our organization’s General Counsel. Gina has helped keep us thinking about rules and considerations for all programs and activities we have undertaken since our founding.

Jessica Kolstad Kim has served as our communications and social media lead since our founding. Her excellent written and verbal skills have helped our organization continue to be a leading voice in the health advocacy world.

Please join us in thanking all the contributions from these three Board Members!
We are pleased to announce that these four outstanding individuals will be joining the HealthAdvocateX Board as of January 1, 2023. Please congratulate and help welcome:

What is the impact of a patient or health care advocate being involved in patient care? Complete a brief, confidential online survey to help us find out. Don’t wait - the deadline to participate is December 20th! https://tinyurl.com/4rurhxkv

Patients, caregivers, advocates, and medical professionals can answer this survey – your perspective is welcome!

The survey is available in Spanish and English. It is designed and run by experts and volunteer researchers who care about the patient experience and is not backed by pharmaceutical companies.

XCenters Will Launch in 2023 – With Transgender Friendly Care XCenter
In 2023, HealthAdvocateX will be launching a new initiative called ‘XCenters.’ The concept behind these centers is to provide credible, understandable and actionable information on a variety of topics through the lens of health advocacy. We want to highlight XCenters as a Center for Excellence, where ‘X’ stands for every individual’s experience, a reference to the superscript X in our name, HealthAdvocateX

We are excited to be partnering with Malynnda A. Johnson, PhD, Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies for the Department of Communication at Indiana State University, who is conducting research and developing training materials to improve trans friendly care with medical providers and patient advocates. Her goal is to incorporate actual experiences from the Trans population as well those who may have been or are advocates for patients.

For Advocates
We will be launching this XCenter with a 4-part Live (and On-Demand) traning module that will also be available for BCPA continuing education. If you are an advocate interested in learning more or if you are interested in being listed as a transfriendly advocate resource, please contact us at [email protected]

For Transgender Patients/Family Members
If you would be willing to be interviewed as part of the project or would be interested in learning more about transgender advocacy please let us know. She can be reached via email at [email protected]

Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access (IDEA) Statement

OUR COMMITMENT
Approved by the Board September 21, 2022
Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access (IDEA) Statement

Our mission is to help people transform into active participants and partners in their own health care. To make this possible, we must advocate for inclusion, diversity, equity, and access (IDEA) for all individuals.

We recognize that:
  • Racism is a public health issue that impacts various intersections and communities differently.
  • Each person is unique and therefore experiences health care differently.
  • Every individual deserves health advocacy regardless of their race, ethnicity, language, nationality, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, spiritual practice, financial status, education, geography, disability, mental and physical status, age, weight, substance use disorder or other factors.
  • Our organization is uniquely positioned to raise awareness on IDEA in health and health care.

We are committed to:
  • Raising awareness about the importance of IDEA in health and health advocacy in all aspects of care.
  • Expanding diverse representation within our organization, expert presenters, and educational offerings.
  • Intentionally messaging our values, sharing IDEA expectations for ourselves, affiliated advocates, and partnering groups.
  • Creating space for respectful dialogue about representation, equitable access, and inclusive practices in health care and health advocacy.
  • Educating our community and participating in opportunities about IDEA events and exercises to keep these issues in the forefront of our work.
  • Implementing systems to ensure IDEA is pervasive in our organization.

We will reflect on our accomplishments with humility and grace. We will recognize our limitations and remain open to what we may not see or realize so that we can improve and or repair any harm.

Land Acknowledgement

HealthAdvocateX is headquartered in Seattle, Washington. We acknowledge that we are on the traditional land of the first people of Seattle, the Duwamish People past and present, and honor with gratitude the land itself and the Duwamish Tribe. We invite you to join us in acknowledging and thanking indigenous people for their ongoing stewardship wherever you are located.
Land Acknowledgement Challenge

Will you help us? We invite YOU to research and submit the name of the people, your location and how you would word your own personal land acknowledgement. Our Board will be selecting and reading land acknowledgements from across the country at our Monthly Board Meetings. You can submit it here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/hadvx-land-acknowledgement
