JUST WHAT THE DOCTOR ORDERED!

A doctor’s receptionist was sitting behind her desk when an elderly woman stormed out of the examining room and left without paying. When the doctor emerged a few moments later, the receptionist asked, “What happened?”

“Well,” said the doctor, “I just told her she was pregnant.”

“Doctor!” exclaimed the receptionist, “Surely that is not possible!”

“Of course, that is not possible,” he replied. “But it sure did cure her hiccups!”

The doctor knew how to make things happen! That is exactly what Jesus liked about that crooked manager in this week’s Gospel. That manager cheated his employer for years and when he was about to be fired, he gives away whatever he hasn’t already stolen from his employer. His whole life is contrary to all of Jesus’ teachings. Yet there is something about him that causes Jesus to say we ought to imitate. It is the manager’s total commitment.

That commitment is so powerful that it enables him to marshal immense amounts of energy, creativity, and ingenuity. He does not even think of failing. He just makes it happen.

So, Jesus says to you and me, “Why aren’t you like that manager and have more enthusiasm and ingenuity in following my commands? I have shown you where your real happiness is to be found; in being my disciples. Why don’t you go to be my disciples with all the strength, creativity, enthusiasm, and energy that our Father gave you? “Why do you wimp around and settle for so little of what really makes life worth living, when so much more is right there at our fingertips?”

The bottom line of gospel is that God’s kingdom is not built by wimps. It is built by those who struggle hard and faithfully remember their purpose.
