Just Who Do We Think We Are?
Jim B. Tucker Says...
|
"Some young children say that they have been here before. They give various details about previous lives, often describing the way in which they died. Of course, young children say a lot of things, and we may simply think that they are fantasizing as children often do.
But what if, in a number of instances, people listened to the children and then tried to find out if the events they described had actually happened? And what if, when those people went to the places the children had named, they found that what the children had said about the past events was indeed true? What then?"
Life Before Life by Jim B. Tucker, Introduction
"Our cases contribute to the evidence that consciousness can survive death.... This means that each of us is more than just a physical body. We have a consciousness as well that is capable of surviving the death of that body."
Life Before Life by Jim B. Tucker, p. 229

I first wrote about Jim B. Tucker on June 22, 2020. That Just Who Do We Think We Are? edition is about children's past lives and the work of Ian Stevenson and Jim B. Tucker of the University of Virginia. Stevenson spent over 40 years investigating and documenting verified facts about children who spoke of their memories of a past life.
Stevenson wrote prolifically in books, journals, and articles about his cases until his retirement in 2002 in a continual effort to convince the scientific community that reincarnation is a worthy subject for scientific research. Stevenson's book entitled 20 Cases Suggestive of Reincarnation was one of the first I read in the late 70s that set me on a 40- year path of collecting past life stories.
Tucker worked with Stevenson for several years before taking over the Division of Perceptual Studies when Stevenson retired. Tucker continues to document cases of young children who remember past lives. He concentrates on American children whose parents, many of whom are desperate for answers, contact him with their child's story. Tucker recently published a new book called Before (2021) which includes republication of his previous books, Life Before Life (2008) and Return to Life (2015), with a new introduction. I hope you enjoy reading about some of Tucker's cases below.
_______________________________
As I mentioned, I have collected past life stories for over 40 years, and I think it is important for people to realize that our consciousness does not end when we die and that we may return to live another life. Here are some of my thoughts about the benefits of knowing about reincarnation, listed somewhat randomly.
- We are not victims of haphazard circumstances.
- Why are some people born into wealth and others into poverty? How can that be fair--if we live only one time? But what if we get to experience many different walks of life over many lifetimes?
- Most reincarnation researchers (Dr. Brian Weiss, Dr. Jim B. Tucker, and Walter Semkiw among others) assert that we most likely helped to plan our current life before we were born, and we chose our parents and circumstances on purpose.
- What if we get a chance to correct behaviors from a previous life? What if we can perfect talents in another life that we began to learn in the last one?
-
There is meaning and purpose for our life.
- We have lived many lives before this one, and we will live many more after this one, probably, I think, based on how quickly we advance toward our goals.
- Death is not the end of our consciousness, which goes to "heaven," or "the other side," or whatever you choose to call it, to rest, discover what we learned in this life, and eventually plan our next life.
- The people closest to us have most likely been in our lives before, although relationships change (mother, daughter, father, son, friend), our race and nationality can change, and even our gender from life to life.
- How can we harbor prejudice against another race if we know that we may be reborn as a member of that race next time?

Jim B. Tucker, M.D.
Jim B. Tucker, M.D., a board-certified child psychiatrist, is a Professor of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the University of Virginia. He is Director of the UVA Division of Perceptual Studies, where he is continuing the work of Dr. Ian Stevenson with children who report memories of a previous life.
Dr. Stevenson had focused his research on cases of children in countries where reincarnation was accepted by a majority of the population, mostly in Asia and India. Dr. Tucker has expanded the cases to many in the United States.
After graduating Phi Beta Kappa with a BA degree in psychology from the University of North Carolina--Chapel Hill, followed by a medical degree four years later, Tucker received training in general psychiatry and child psychiatry at the University of Virginia, where he established a successful private practice in psychiatry.
| |
Upon first learning about Dr. Stevenson's work, Tucker became intrigued both by the children’s reports of past-life memories and by the prospect of studying them using an objective, scientific approach. In 1999, he began working with Stevenson half-time, and a year later, he gave up his private practice completely to work full-time at the university.
Dr. Tucker began to look for and find cases in the United States of children who remembered past lives. He has published two books about American cases, as well as numerous papers in scientific journals. He has spoken before both scientific and general audiences and has made a number of television appearances, including Good Morning America, Larry King Live, and CBS Sunday Morning.

Two Well-known Cases
The two best known verified American cases of children's reincarnation memories are of James Leininger, who remembered being a fighter pilot killed in WWII, and Ryan Hammons, who remembered living in Hollywood as a film star agent and having a part in a movie. Tucker details their stories in Return to Life along with other recent cases. I wrote about these two cases in the July 2, 2020, edition of Just Who Do We Think We Are?. That issue and the June 22, 2020 issue about Stevenson and Tucker can be found by clicking the archived issues button at the end of this newsletter.
Tucker writes that "part of what is exciting about this work is how the cases give clues about what survival after death might entail....including intriguing descriptions of events from their time between lives....Both James and Ryan gave startlingly accurate details about their parents' activities around the early time of the pregnancy." (Jim B. Tucker, Before, Introduction, p. X)
Because of the internet and more publicity, Tucker writes that more parents are reaching out for answers. In 2021, over a hundred parents contacted him after their children reported memories of a previous life. (Jim B. Tucker, Before, Introduction, p. XIII)

A Comeback Kid?
Return to Life, pp. 1-17
Tucker tells about his first case working with Dr. Ian Stevenson. A mother who lived in a Midwestern suburb was convinced that her son Patrick was her deceased son returned to life. Sometimes same family cases can be suspect because the child may have heard family members speak about the deceased person. Patrick's case was intriguing because there was physical evidence in three birthmarks that appeared to match lesions on his deceased half-brother.

Famous Names from the Past
A Return to Life, pp. 120-122
Tucker states that the number of famous people from the past would be such a small proportion of the total population that it is unlikely any given person was famous in a past life. But as a correspondent once remarked to Stevenson, "If we've all had past lives, some of us must have been famous before."
Tucker includes the next two cases in Return to Life, one boy who remembered writing Gone With the Wind and one who claimed to have been Bobby Jones, the golfer, "when he was big."
A Golf Channel
Return to Life, pp. 130-133
Tucker heard from the father of Hunter when the child was three years old. His father told that when Hunter was two, he received a set of plastic golf clubs that he loved and played with incessantly. His parents did not play golf and had no interest in it. One day Hunter caught a glimpse of the Golf Channel when his father was scrolling the channels, and he begged his dad to go back to it. After that, Hunter no longer watch his cartoons--it was always the Golf Channel, on which his parents eventually put time limits--30 minutes in the morning and 30 minutes at night.
One day, Hunter saw an infomercial about Bobby Jones, and he told his parents he had been Bobby Jones when he was big. He began saying his name was Bobby Jones and would correct people if they called him Hunter.

He Came from Hollywood Too
A Return to Life, pp. 122-130
A mother named Jennifer had been searching the internet for someone to help her when she found Jim B. Tucker's name and she emailed him. She thought her son Lee, who was three, might be remembering a past life. It started a year before when he argued about his middle name and the date of his birthday. He insisted his middle name was "Coe" and that his birthday was June 26 not June 21. He became angry because his mother would not take him to his "other house;" he hadn't been there is a long time and he needed to go to work.
Tucker flew to meet the family in a small Midwestern town. He learned that when Lee was two and a half he began to talk about his "other mommy." He said her maiden name was Coe. When his mother said her name is Jennifer, he said that was his daughter's name. Jennifer stated that Lee developed an "obscene fascination" with Hollywood and said he had to go there to go to work.

Past life stories "are telling us that there is more to reality than just physical matter. And there is more to us than just physical matter. And more to the story than you live once and then you die, the end. Instead of the end, the cases tell us we can have a return to life.
How about that?"

A Word About
The Law of Attraction
"There is not something you’re supposed to do. There’s not something that you should do. There is only that which you are inspired to do. And how do you get inspired except by the contrast? It’s the life experience that gives you the idea of the desire, and then as you focus upon the desire, the Energy flows."

"Contrast" in the quote above means the contrast of good vs. bad, which is available on earth. There is no contrast on "the other side"--it's all good. That's why souls choose to come to earth, to experience the contrast. And through life experiences, when we find what we don't want, it helps us know what we do want. When we can focus on what we do want, the Law of Attraction brings it to us. Actually the Law of Attraction brings us whatever we focus on, good or bad.
"Thoughts become things. Choose the good ones." Mike Dooley
Abraham teaches that we are here on earth to learn to create what we want. Sometimes the trick is knowing what we want. Mike Dooley says if we're not sure what we want, we can start by thinking in general terms like peace, love, beauty, health, etc. Shari

I believe we are eternal spiritual beings who are currently
living one of our many lives on Earth and who are the co-creators

I LOVE TO SEND YOU GOOD NEWS!
Good things are happening in the world that we may not have heard about! Shari
From the November 21, 2023, Future Crunch Newsletter
"China and the US just joined the EU in backing global efforts to triple renewable energy by 2030 and limit emissions of nitrous oxide and methane. This is a big deal. Tripling would require growing global solar and wind capacity from 2,000 GW to about 6,000 GW by 2030. That's a stunning goal, but achievable." NYT
"This week a Chinese utility announced it will build an 11 GW renewable energy project in the desert, with more generating capacity than New Zealand; and last week the government designated 15 cities, including Beijing and Shenzhen, to be pilot zones for clean public transport, with plans to add 600,000 new electric vehicles in the next three years."
"Over 80 million people across India cleaned up 900,000 sites on the 1st of October. Rubbish was cleaned from streets, highways, railway tracks and stations, health institutions, beaches, tourist locations, bodies of water, places of worship, slums, market areas, airports, and zoos and wildlife areas." Indian Express
"Canada will ban its domestic trade of elephant ivory and rhino horn and the import of hunting trophies containing these parts. The landmark measures are thanks to a seven-year campaign by activists, who are working to help combat the $20 billion illegal wildlife trade." World Animal News

If this "Good-News-Letter" inspires anyone to look into the law of attraction or past lives or what happens when we die, I will be satisfied. I am convinced that these are all profound truths: that our thoughts and beliefs influence the things and events of our lives, that we live many lives, that we never die--our consciousness continues on, and that in-between our lives, we rest, study, learn, and plan our purpose for our next life.
For me, these ideas are "good news" and help to answer universal questions about why we are here. Please take what resonates with you and leave the rest. Shari
