Opioids and Young People

Dan Delgado, Former Candor Health Educator

The opioid crisis continues to evolve—and young people are increasingly in its path.

Candor Health Education’s latest article explores how prescription painkillers, synthetic opioids like fentanyl, and a lack of early education combine to create a serious risk for adolescents. It also outlines how starting age-appropriate conversations early—on topics like what an opioid actually is, how addiction works, and how to read medication labels—can make a difference. Read on to learn how we can support youth in making safer choices and protect them from the hidden dangers of opioids.

Ohio State University

A new study from Ohio State University and Nationwide Children's Hospital shows that the type of social media platform adolescents use can significantly affect their sexual health behaviors. Teens who rely on interactive platforms like Snapchat and Instagram are more likely to engage in risky behaviors, while those who use informational platforms like YouTube tend to make healthier choices.

This research emphasizes the importance of directing young individuals toward trustworthy sources of information to promote safer sexual health decisions.

7-OH Is An Opioid Hiding In Plain Sight

Psychology Today

There’s a little-known compound making waves in the opioid landscape: 7-hydroxymitragynine, or 7-OH. Found in the kratom plant, it’s now appearing as a highly concentrated opioid-like substance—sold in gas stations and smoke shops under names like “enhanced kratom,” gummies, or frozen treats. Up to 13 times more potent than morphine, 7-OH is increasingly linked to addiction and overdose.

This article reveals how it’s being marketed, what its real risks are, and why early education and awareness must include this hidden threat.

This fall’s newsletter takes a deep dive into “gas station drugs” — substances like Delta-8, Tianeptine, Kratom, and Phenibut that are becoming increasingly available and marketed in ways that appeal to young people. While these drugs are easy to access, their risks are often misunderstood or overlooked.

ILLINOIS YOUTH SURVEY

Registration for the 2026 Illinois Youth Survey (IYS) is open

While it may seem like just another student questionnaire, the IYS is much more than that. It’s one of the most critical tools we have for understanding the experiences, behaviors, and needs of llinois youth—and for translating that understanding into effective, data-informed action at both the local and state levels. But the value of this data depends on one key factor: participation. The more schools that participate, the more accurate and useful the data becomes—not just at the state level, but in each individual community.
