Sacramento County Public Defender’s Pretrial Support Program Helps Divert People with Mental Health Needs

Facing increasing numbers of people with mental health needs and co-occurring substance use disorders in the Sacramento County (CA) Jail, the Sacramento County Public Defender’s Office built a pretrial support program to increase defendants’ access to case planning and community services, reduce the jail population, and increase community safety. The Council of State Governments (CSG) Justice Center interviewed Sacramento County Defense Attorney Tiffanie Synnott to better understand their efforts.

New Study Reveals Strategies to Prevent Medication Diversion in Jail-Based Programs  

A new University of Massachusetts study sheds light on effective program design to combat medication diversion in correctional facilities. These findings empower jail-based programs to enhance patient care and safety while addressing medication misuse. Read more about the recommendations for corrections and lawmakers considering medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) treatment.

Alternative First Responder Models Can Support Youth in Crisis

This webinar will explore diversion approaches and policies that work to support youth with behavioral health needs in the community instead of through the juvenile justice system. With youth often bouncing between detention, hospitals, and the community without continuity of care, developing alternative first responder models and diversion policies can help meet their health needs in the community and improve overall outcomes. Join our webinar to learn how states and counties have implemented these approaches to meet youth’s needs more effectively.
