Public Health Meets Public Safety – A New Tool for California Policymakers

Public Health Meets Public Safety is a collaboration between the CSG Justice Center and the California Council on Criminal Justice and Behavioral Health that gives California’s policymakers a new tool to promote positive outcomes for people with behavioral health needs.

Researchers and data scientists created a framework that overlays community-based factors, including educational attainment, food insecurity rates, and access to community health care facilities, with criminal justice outcomes. This framework was then used to build a data visualization tool that allows policymakers to see the correlations between these datasets at the statewide, regional, and county levels and pinpoint how to improve public health and public safety outcomes for Californians.
