Two days ago, Wisconsin had its Spring Election – and while the results were a mixed bag, as we’d expect from one of the swingiest swing states, there were some real signs of hope. (Thanks to our partners at America Votes Wisconsin and the Political Charge blog for many of the insights below.)
Turnout was unprecedented in a Spring Election with no statewide elections.
Republican Kelly Ruh, who was running for re-election as an alderperson, and who had served as a fake elector to help Trump overturn the 2020 election results… LOST!
3 vocally anti-LGBTQ+ candidates for School Board in Eau Claire… LOST!
In Milwaukee, Democrat Cavalier Johnson WON... becoming the city's first Black mayor!
And Menominee County, which has the same borders as the Menominee Reservation, increased its turnout by over 500% compared to last year… and overwhelmingly passed a funding referendum for the Menominee Indian School District! Children in this district will now have a new high school, upgraded middle school and elementary school, and new equipment for learning.

CAFFEINATION & INSPIRATION
FOR VOTER DRIVE LEADERS
Field Team 6 continues its new "Coffee is for Closers," a monthly Zoom coffee with Founder Jason Berlin for anyone who has led at least one voter drive. This is a great forum to share hard-earned lessons, bond with badass activists, and learn new tricks to level up your drives.
This week, veteran voter drive leader (in AZ and CA) Helen Wong had this useful and hilarious tip: “Talk to voters like they’re a friend. No one wants to get stuck in a boring conversation. I even approach voters head on with an enthusiastic “hi” and a wave, like I’m meeting them for lunch. If anything, it’s at least bought me some quick intros while they try to remember who I am and how they know me before realizing they don’t."

HANG 10 WITH THE BLUE WAVE
Say aloha to our partner, The Blue Wave committee of the Oahu County Democratic Party. They actively support Democratic campaigns in contested elections in other states with competitive elections, and share our focus on saving Democratic control of both houses of Congress in the midterms.
Their volunteers have made phone calls, sent texts, and prior to the pandemic, traveled in person to knock on doors in other states. In addition, over 100 volunteers have sent thousands of handwritten postcards over the past year, through the Field Team 6 postcarding system, with campaigns going on now into Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Arizona, and North Carolina. Cowabunga!

Get ready to BYOP – Bring Your Own Phone (*plan)! We're bootcamping this very afternoon… Thursday, April 7 at 4p PT. We’ll train you how to text from your computer, using your data plan (or a free Google Voice number). Once trained, you can do this on your own time, whenever you like!
We'll be texting and registering new Democrats in all 9 swing states (!!) — AZ, CA, FL, GA, NC, NV, PA, TX, and WI. Let's get Democrats elected up and down the ballot!
We've upgraded the tech with some sassy Chrome extensions that turn this into a two-click operation! If you have an ActionID, Chrome browser, and software to text from your computer (see BYOP: How to Get Started above), you're ready. RSVP!

National Voter Registration Day... just once a year? PREPOSTEROUS! That's why, together with a consortium of national grassroots voter registration organizations, we've turned National Voter Registration Day into a monthly event!
April 12 is your next chance to build on the wild success of our first three Days of Action (Jan 6, Feb 8, Mar 8) by helping register Democrats. Find an action-packed event HERE.

NEXT PARTNER MEETING
Our first "How to Partner with Field Team 6" meeting – about all the ways we can join forces with other organizations – was a smashing success!
It's got us super psyched for the next one on Tuesday, April 12 at 5p PT/8p ET, and you can sign up for it right HERE! (We'll be doing these every two weeks for the foreseeable future, so be sure to keep an eye out for future meetings if you can't make this one.)
Forging partnerships with organizations like They See Blue, WAVE, DVC, Indivisible chapters, Swing Left chapters, Four Directions, Putnam Progressives, Blue Revolution, Together We Elect (and many more!) is how we scale up. It's how we register even more new Democrats, win the November midterms, and save democracy!
We've built a super-sexy infrastructure, acquired mountains of data, and developed a user-friendly partnership system, so that we can help your organization to run in-person voter drives, textbank, phonebank, postcard, and social media storm.
Your organization can partner in just one way – or all the ways. And we encourage you to tailor every script to the voice of your audience. Together, we will help register far more swing state Democrats. See you there!

SOCIAL MEDIA STORMS
Did you know... we just celebrated one entire year of weekly Social Storm trainings! We started storming in 2020, and then began the weekly trainings one year ago. In that year, we generated over 1.2 billion impressions – that’s 1.2 billion sets of eyeballs who’ve seen our tweets!
Last week marks 9 weeks in a row with over 50 million impressions, 13 weeks in a row with over 40 million impressions! We could hit 2 billion by mid-terms!
So join us at our next awesome social storm on Wednesday, April 13 at 11a PT as we jump onto the web yet again to raise awareness for Field Team 6's efforts to #RegisterDemocrats and save the world. We’ll also be recruiting volunteers for our ongoing in-person voter drive trainings, phonebanks, textbanks and postcarding programs. These storms are making a difference and will help form the basis of a blue tsunami this fall.

SUNDAY, APRIL 24:
TAKING IT TO THE STATES!
Field Team 6 and partner Democratic Volunteer Center (DVC) are co-hosting an incredibly important webinar on Sunday, April 24 at 1p PT. The topic: how to beat back Republican attempts to use GOP-led state legislatures to subvert free and fair elections.
Attacks on the freedom to vote, and on our ability to freely and fairly count those votes, have dramatically increased in the past year, largely via anti-voter laws passed by GOP-controlled statehouses. These laws seek to limit every aspect of voting, including voter registration, early and absentee voting, and even ballot counting. Experts have also suggested that a fringe legal theory known as the independent state legislature doctrine, which is now appearing in briefs submitted to the Supreme Court, could lead to a subversion of the will of the voters in the 2024 presidential election.
In this talk, Daniel Squadron of The States Project discusses the crucial role of state majorities in creating election law, the critical need to elect pro-democracy candidates to statehouses, and the key target states to focus on for 2022 and 2024.

VOLUNTEER SHOUT-OUT: KALA MAXYM |
|
This week the FT6 Train of Gratitude is picking up a new Passenger of Honor: Kala Maxym! She is a dedicated volunteer who has remained active in American politics while traveling the world and living in the UK, Spain, Chile, and across the U.S. Of course, her favorite possession is her passport! (That's her on the left with her sister Maya, doing GOTV in the Blue Wave 2018 midterms).
"My first real activism was in 2008. I was living in London as an opera singer, and I worked with Democrats Abroad calling US citizens in the UK and helping them vote from abroad."
Since then, Kala has worked in every election in some capacity—going door-to-door, phone banking, or working as a clerk, poll watcher, or poll observer.
"I'm an activist because I can't not be one. It often feels overwhelming, of course, but the way I see it, the other option is apathy, which isn't really an option for me."
As a professionally trained opera singer who speaks, German, Spanish, French and English (and is learning Italian), Kala uses her unique skills to her advantage. "As a performer you have to be able to assume any role given to you. I think of my work as a volunteer in that way: 'who do I need to play today to communicate what I need to in this moment.' I also harness my language skills, and my powers of persuasion."
She's had some interesting experiences as a volunteer, like the time in 2012, somewhere in Pennsylvania, when she showed up early on Election Day. "Some old guy (who was supposed to be a poll watcher) didn't show up." That's how she became a poll watcher. She "...went to the polling place, worked all day and into the night."
Because she's passionate about voting rights, access to voting, and voter registration, she's done a range of jobs at FT6, doing in-person voter registration, texting, creating the Voices for Votes event series in 2020, becoming a crucial member of the Events Team, and most recently serving as the Thinker-Upper of our new Partnership Program! She's now heading up that program as our Partnerships Team Lead (see the "How to Partner with Field Team 6" event series above).
When Kala dreams of the future, she imagines a world in which "FT6 becomes defunct because everyone is automatically registered to vote and kindness becomes more appealing than power."
Kala, we love your passion, your purpose, and your brilliance. We're honored to work side-by-side with you, and hope to register many, many more Democrats together.

One of Field Team 6's coolest tools is our Voter Drive in a Box – the digital version of everything you need to hold your own voter drive in a swing state: training videos, manuals, cheat sheets, etc.
Now we're introducing the physical version. Our Voter Drive in a Box Box is not just metaphorical... it’s an actual box filled with everything a first-time drive leader needs to host their own voter drive: clipboards, pens, forms, stickers, and more – for up to 8 volunteers!
To achieve our goal of mailing one of these state-specific goodie boxes—for free!—to every volunteer who signs up to lead their first voter drive, we're looking for people to Adopt-a-Box.
