In a year of relentless attacks on sexual and reproductive rights, our commitment to justice has never been more vital. From legal battles over bodily autonomy to widening health disparities, the fight is far from finished—and neither are we.
At the Sexual and Reproductive Justice Hub at CUNY SPH, we’ve been hard at work since our founding last year: amplifying research, mobilizing to advocate, and building community to push back against oppression and advance health equity. We are launching this newsletter as a way of keeping you informed, engaged, and ready to take action.

Over the past year, SRJ Hub faculty and students have actively leveraged their expertise to provide evidence-backed arguments in support of policies that advance sexual and reproductive justice.

The October 26, 2024 edition of the Lancet featured a profile on CUNY SPH Senior Associate Dean and SRJ Hub founding faculty Terry McGovern.
McGovern believes wide ranging policies are needed to make a difference for women and children and she would like to see political leaders “broaden the conversation. It’s not just about restoring Roe v Wade, it’s actually setting right this longer set of connections. This is not just about abortion. This is about a whole set of interacting factors. We are not holding states accountable for refusing to invest in maternal and child health or their unwillingness to invest in sexuality education and pregnancy prevention training, or accountable for foster care systems rife with abuses”, she explains. “I don’t feel like the conversation goes deep enough, and so I feel like they’re missing opportunities.”

In an editorial published in BMJ, Senior Associate Dean Terry McGovern and doctoral student and adjunct lecturer Ira Memaj, along with Northeastern University’s Samantha Garbers, shed light on the devastating consequences of restrictive abortion laws across the U.S.

In an op-ed for the Boston Globe last spring, Terry McGovern and Ayman El-Mohandes made the case that overwhelming evidence backed the safety of abortion medications. They laid out why undermining the FDA's authority on medication abortion would be a mistake.

In November, the SRJ Hub launched the newest iteration of the civil society-led Global 16 Days of Activism to End Gender-Based Violence campaign.
Under the stewardship of the SRJ Hub, the campaign now will transition into a year-round initiative, reflecting the 365-days-a-year efforts of feminist activists to shift norms, secure accountability, and transform power structures that oppress women, girls, and gender-diverse people.

Senior Associate Dean Terry McGovern fondly remembers her longtime friend, Cecile Richards, who passed away on Monday, January 20 after a long struggle with glioblastoma.
"Cecile fought to the end, for her own life, but really for all of our lives. Cecile never could accept or tolerate the human rights abuses faced by women, girls, and all folks facing inequity. Through her many roles, from community organizer, to president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, to the creation of the storytelling project, Abortion in America, she led with unending grace, wit, and brilliance. And as she fought on through a heartbreaking diagnosis, she exemplified the best of us."
