Our children are the future of the nation. They depend on quality education during their childhood and teen years in order to effectively lead their communities upon graduation. As a former public schoolteacher, I understand that parents, teachers, and school administrators at the local level have greater knowledge of their students' needs than the federal government. We need to reduce the federal government's role in our local school districts' affairs so that teachers can more easily focus on the issues affecting their students and families.

The Obama Administration is marked by failed policies that worsened the quality of public K-12 education. The Common Core legislation imposed top-down unworkable regulations on schools. Michelle Obama's legislation imposed further unworkable mandates on local schools through the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. Whereas this bill intended to improve students' health by enacting federal mandates, it created tasteless lunches that students more often threw away than ate, causing some students to lack the nutrients or energy they needed for their daily activities.

Earlier this month, I introduced the Local Control of School Lunch Act. This bill would roll back the failed policies of the Obama Administration by allowing states to set nutrient requirements and giving local administrators control of school lunch pricing.

Our nation was founded on the principle of federalism. Although some issues, such as defense, should be decided by all states collectively, education policy should be decided by parents, teachers, and school administrators that know and understand our students. My bills relating to education were inspired by stories and concerns shared with me. I humbly ask for your continued input and hope that you will support me by visiting www.vickyhartzler.com to contribute $100, $50, or $25.

Onward,
