University collaboration to spark breakthroughs in human, animal health
 

1Data is a collaborative project with Kansas State University's Manhattan and Olathe campuses and the University of Missouri-Kansas City. It establishes a new standard for analyzing human and animal health information. In doing this, researchers can create the next generation of approaches to curing or mitigating human and animal diseases. Scientists also will be able to fully simulate the design of animal models and identify congruencies between cross-species diseases.

Faculty Profile: Paige Adams

Dr. Paige Adams is a research assistant professor at K-State Olathe. An immunologist by training, she was born into the world of veterinary medicine -- having a father at Texas A&M University who specializes in cattle diseases, learning how to ride and care for horses at a young age, and showing large animals in 4-H.

Angela Buzard

Angela Buzard joined K-State Olathe as the manager of training and development. She will create and manage self-supporting educational programs and activities that enhance workforce development in Greater Kansas City.



Around the campus
  

On June 15, K-State Olathe was proud to welcome cooks from military bases all across the country -- including as far as Hawaii. The cooks, who work in day care food services at the bases, were being trained at K-State Olathe in making new menu items that matched updated regulations and are healthy and delicious. After a day of knife skills and practice cutting different vegetables and herbs, the group spent two days recreating and refining recipes. Bryan Severns, director of food programs and services and a trained chef, assisted with the sessions and helped cooks with their preparation techniques. The project was initiated through a grant written by Jennifer Hanson, assistant professor in the department of food, nutrition, dietetics and health, and Marlene VerBrugge, research assistant professor in the School of Family Studies and Human Services --both at Kansas State University. K-State Olathe will host a second group in July.


Fifteen high school students kicked off their summer with the One Health Summer Online Course from K-State Olathe. They will spend the month of June learning about the complex interrelationships between humans, animals and the environment from our faculty experts and experiencing what an online college-level course is like. Students met on campus for the first class to collaborate with group members on their zoonotic disease projects.
