David Loewen presented his master's thesis on the effects of growing grafted tomato and pepper plants under high tunnels - a low-cost alternative to greenhouses. Grafting is an ancient horticulture technique of cutting and joining tissues of the plant so that they grow together. Loewen spent several growing seasons looking at how grafted hybrid tomato and pepper plants performed. Plants were evaluated on the amount of the food they produced, the marketability of the produce, plants' ability to combat disease and more.
