Willie and the Salad Bonanza, Sept. 16
-- This contest challenges student teams in grades K-12 to grow the largest amounts of spinach, kale and lettuce in a single container over the course of 43 days.
K-State will provide free seeds and contest rules. All competitors are invited to the food-related career expo during the judging on Oct. 28, 4-5:30 p.m. The deadline to register a team is Sept. 16. |

Chetan Sharma, doctoral student in human nutrition, presented his dissertation on the sensory and consumer aspects of potatoes. He discussed descriptive terms, how to get the best feedback from consumers and consumer behavior around spuds.

Brittany Wilhite, master's student in the veterinary biomedical science program, recently presented her master's report. She discussed the current challenges in controlling diseases in ruminant animals that are associated with three mycoplasma. Wilhite, from Alaska, completed her degree in a year and plans to earn her D.V.M.

Several students and faculty members from the urban food systems program recently presented their research at the American Society for Horticultural Science's National Conference in Las Vegas. Doctoral candidates Kelly Gude and Konstantinos Batziakas both took home awards for their research. Cary Rivard, associate professor and extension specialist of horticulture and natural resources, took home an award for a an extension video.
