Message from KACC Executive Director

With Harvest Festival almost finished up and September just around the corner, we hope that you had a great summer season and are looking forward to a change of pace for the Fall.

I want to take this time to thank our Summer Staff, Kallia Hernandez! Kallia is a recent graduate with a Sociology degree and has joined us for the summer.

Kallia was a huge asset and brought her creativity to create some great graphics and social media posts and brought the "Sidewalk Sale" back to life after 12 years and had a very successful event!

Thank you Kallia and we are glad that you will still be staying involved with the Chamber!

CANADA - US TARIFFS

As you’ve all heard by now talks between Canada and the U.S. broke down late Friday night, and the 50% Section 338 tariffs took effect at 12:01 a.m. Saturday. Prime Minister Carney said the U.S. side "asked too much, and offered too little," so he suspended negotiations and recalled Canada's negotiating team. No further talks are currently scheduled.

Canada plans to respond in kind with "dollar for dollar" tariffs beginning September 8.

IMPLICATIONS FOR PEI

Direct exposure from U.S. tariffs remains limited for PEI for the reasons outlined last week. Our biggest exports aren't named in the annexes, however some of our members with U.S. customers, that have not been subject to tariffs to date may find themselves in a new situation this week, and those with supply chains that remain heavily reliant on U.S. imports may be impacted by Canada’s retaliatory tariffs even if export exposure is low.

WHERE PEI BUSINESSES CAN GET HELP NOW

Federal and regional support is already available and doesn't require waiting for a resolution:

• ACOA's Regional Tariff Response Initiative (RTRI) — up to $1 million in non-repayable funding for tariff-affected P.E.I. businesses to boost productivity, diversify markets, or strengthen supply chains. Call 1-888-576-4444 or contact your ACOA program officer to start an application.
• Community Business Development Corporations (CBDC) - across the Island offer advisory services and can help assess exposure and next steps.
• Innovation PEI - provides various supports through their team of dedicated trade development officers.
• Atlantic Chamber of Commerce Export Program

Businesses should also confirm their exact HTS classification with a customs broker before assuming they're exposed or exempt.

The Canadian Chamber of Commerce has a nowcast tool, BDLNow,

to produce real-time estimates of Canada’s quarterly GDP growth ahead of Statistics Canada quarterly figures. Check out the new tool here.
