Friends,
I am still buoyed up by the Anthem shared by the joint choir presentation this past week. Our choir will join the Chandler First Choir this coming Sunday to present the same anthem in their worship services. My thanks to Cris, Caroline and the choir for hosting the choir from Chandler First for this special event.
It is hard to believe Lent is just around the corner. This means
The Red Mountain Brass will be with us for Mardi Gras Day on March 3 sharing brass music with us before Lent. On March 6 which is Ash Wednesday, we will have a special service for the imposition of Ashes in the Sanctuary at 4:00 pm.
My appreciation to the folk who are hosting and facilitating our Lenten Small Groups this year.
Simon Peter, Flawed but Faithful Disciple is the emphasis for these small groups. Groups will meet at various times either at the church or in a facilitator's home. Signup sheets may be found in Lindsey Hall entryway beginning February 17. Each small group will view a DVD presentation by Rev. Adam Hamilton regarding Simon Peter. This will lead into a time of discussion and fellowship. We anticipate sessions of about 90 minutes. You are encouraged to purchase a ($15) book for your use. We do have room for more facilitators, if you are interested let me know.

Lord God, you have always been our source of refuge and hope. Save us from the arrogance of thinking you act only here or that you speak only to people like us. Keep us aware of how dependent we are on you and each other. We are captive to our doubts and fears. We are blind to our prejudice and narrow vision. Forgive us. Grasp us in your strong arms of love so we might respond to your grace with surprised joy. We claim your salvation with grateful thanksgiving and praise. Renew your spirit of acceptance and graciousness in our relationships with each other. Help us live as your forgiven and forgiving children. Amen.

Join the Men's Gathering, Wednesday, February 13, 9:00 am, Room 4 when Forrest Kohler, president of the board of directors for the East Valley Fire Corporation, will discuss the major changes our Sun Lakes Fire Department has gone through in the last year.
Forrest is a long time member of SLUMC and a former chair of the SLUMC Church Council.

Pastor Jean and Bev Tarpley have teamed-up again to facilitate another memorable day with a program called Having a Joy-Filled Heart.
Tickets are still only $10, which includes the program, handouts, morning refreshments and lunch, purchased in the church office and in Lindsay Hall this Sunday.

L.O.L. is a social gathering for the women of our church. You are encouraged to invite a female friend, neighbor, or relative you think might enjoy getting out and meeting new ladies.
Tickets go on sale ($5) Sunday, February 17 between services in the portico or can be purchased in the office after the 17th. Ticket sales will close after Sunday, February 24 due to the popularity of this event.

Adam Hamilton's John
: The Gospel of Light and Life
, will be offered in March on Thursdays, 9:00 am - 10:30 am and Tuesdays 7:00 - 8:30 pm. The facilitator and leader for the sessions will be Rev. Jim Wood.
An orientation session for the morning class will be held Thursday, February 2

The six-week,
90
-minute, class sessions begin two weeks later.
Hamilton
writes, "There are two themes tying the six sessions of this study together: light and life. John wrote in the prologue of his Gospel that Jesus Christ is 'the light for all people' - John 1:4. And toward the end of his Gospel John tells us that 'these things are written so that you will believe that Jesus is the Christ, God's Son, and that believing, you will have life in his name' (John 20:31)."
Cost for the participant book is ($
15), couples may share the same book.
Those taking the study will also need to bring their Bibles and a notebook to journal. A video component featuring Hamilton will be viewed in each session for enhancing the discussion.

It's baseball time again! Save the date!
On Tuesday, April 9 we will head to Chase Field to watch the Diamondbacks play the Texas Rangers. Our transportation has been arranged and we will meet at the church to ride together to the game.
