Kairos Vol. 4, Issue #2

SLUMC Building Front
Friends,

There is to be a special called session of the General Conference of the United Methodist Church February 23-26 in Saint Louis. The purpose of this conference is to address 3 proposals from a special commission regarding a way forward on the issue of homosexuality. Since 1972 the Church has had specific statements in The Book of Discipline regarding homosexuality as it relates to the ordination of pastors. Each 4 years there have been proposals to remove and/or change the language of The Book of Discipline. At the 2016 General Conference a commission of 32 persons from around the world was tasked with recommending a way forward to the Council of Bishops which are passing them on to the General Conference for a decision as to which of the 3 ways we will follow.

I invite you to join me in learning more about these 3 proposals as they are stirring up conversation, questions, and concerns by Lay persons and Pastors.  I will host 3 conversations as follows:
  • Tuesday, January 15 at 1:30 in pm Lindsay Hall
  • Tuesday, January 22 at 1:30 pm in Lindsay Hall
  • Thursday, January 24 at 10:00 am in Lindsay Hall

UNISON PRAYER - JANUARY 5/6
Unison Prayer Logo
Loving and Compassionate God, as the old year slips away, forgive us for times and situations this past year when we failed to live as You call us to live. As the new year dawns, help us to live into being the "new creations" about which the Apostle Paul wrote. Give us the boldness we need to reach beyond ourselves and share the wonder of Your grace with everyone we encounter. Help us to let go of any thoughts of "us and them" and see others through Your eyes as Your precious children. For the challenges to come, we pray for Your courage. In times to come of weakness, we pray for Your strength. For decisions to be made, we pray for Your wisdom and guidance. In times of sorrow and pain, may we feel Your comfort. In times of blessing, may we remember to give You thanks. Through all this new year brings, may we hold tight to Your hope, joy, peace, and love that is ours through faith in Christ Jesus, Your Son. For it is in His name, we pray. Amen!

  GRIEFSHARE
Jokes are made about New Year Resolutions mainly because the resolutions last about as long as it takes to make them. So many of us have the best of intentions, but we don't make good on them.

However, if your heart is aching because of the death of a loved one and you don't want to live in pain, be intentional about making a resolution to take care of yourself. One way is by participating in GriefShare, beginning tomorrow, January 9 , 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm, Room 4.

For more information or to register ($15), call the church office, contact Pastor Jean, or check the church website at sunlakesumc.org .

If you, a family member, or a friend is challenged by hearing loss, please come and join us for education, sharing, and refreshments. All are welcome. You owe it to yourself! CART (real-time captioning) is provided and the meeting room is looped.
